More About the Author

Hi there Amazonians, greetings and thanks for stopping to read this. I have written seven novels (WHAT? how did that happen. That's completely bonkers.) Yes, seven. Anyway while I get over that, what else do you need to know? I live in London, near the canal. I like: the Golden Girls, karaoke, the clothes shop Anthropologie, books books and more books, and my daughter Cora and my boyfriend Chris. Not in that order. I used to work in publishing and look at authors and think well, I can do that! SoI thought I'd fulfill my life-long ambition and try writing a book because how hard can it be? Now I know the answer which is: er, kind of pretty hard. But it's the best job in the world (apart from acting in musicals which one day I also hope to do *stop kidding yourself & get back to work*) and I know that too.

My latest book, NOT WITHOUT YOU, is out now. It's about two film stars, one present-day, one from the 50s and the secret that links them. I loved writing it. I love old films and this was like research, but in my pajamas.

If you'd like to get in touch I would love to hear from you. Please visit my website:

‘A fresh take on chick-lit… You’ll race through the pages to find out what happens to them both’ Heat

‘A multi-faceted tale of fading fame and shifting fortunes’ Grazia

‘This cleverly constructed, dark tale [is] dripping with dark humour, gritty realism, with a little bit of romance thrown in too. An absorbing read’ Star

‘The shallow LA of today is wittily satirised, and the more glamorous age of the 50s brilliantly recalled’ Sunday Mirror

I was very lucky to receive an early copy of Harriet Evans new book Not Without You and having enjoyed her others was looking forward to it. What I didn't realise was that the book would be the best in this genre I have read this year so far! Sophie Leigh is a movie star; except her real name is Sophie Sykes and she originally grew up in England even though she now leads the glamorous life of an A-Lister. The early chapters are interesting as we get to meet Sophie and her slightly mad life with the crazy `Hollywood' types such as her agent. You also get to see the real Sophie too which I liked. She's a pretty ordinary girl who made it as an actress but she has a real passion for the old time movie star Eve Noel. Eve Noel was a star herself in the 50s and 60s but then disappeared from public life never to be seen again.

At first glance Harriet's book looks like any other number of books in this genre but what the cover doesn't convey is that there is a somewhat dark side to this story. We get to see Sophie's life start to spiral as she refuses to do another `Rom-Com' movie, and the fans that once loved her seem to now despise her. There are numerous characters appearing in this book and what I really loved is the fact that the synopsis gives just enough away without telling too much. I will aim to do the same so will refrain from going over certain details of the book.

We get to see Sophie change locations so the book is part set in USA and part in the English countryside. I felt myself getting pulled further and further into the book and certain elements had a dark side and I was questioning who was involved in it right until the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Without You 25 Nov 2013
By EssexReader VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In the 1950's twenty year old Eve Noel goes England to California to seek fame and fortune.

In the current day, thirty year old Sophie Leigh has gone from England to Hollywood to seek fame and fortune.

- both women will find themselves sucked in and chewed up by the vicious film industry.

We first meet Eve, when she is 6 years old and playing with her older sister Rose in their English garden but then Rose accidentally drowns and Eve's life will never be the same again. It is then the 1950's and Eve is 20 years old when she makes her way to California to find stardom and fame and she really is an innocent abroad. In the days when young starlets were chaperoned to parties to meet the film producers who would decide their fate, the Hollywood machine wastes no time in getting its claws into people like Eve. Lecherous studio bosses and their spies do their very best to make young girls like Eve jump through hoops to keep their career not caring what the consequences may be.

Sophie Leigh (actually Sophie Sykes) is nearly 30. She too has gone from England to America to be a film star. We are now in the present day and really things don't seem to have changed much. The studios don't seem to have quite so much control over their star's lives although they can still make and break careers with dirty tricks and the wrong word here and there.

Sophie has made her name playing ditzy characters in rom-coms. However, with her career on the downward slide, she now wants to do more than act in the third rate film scripts that come her way. She is also obsessed with the 1950's actress Eve Noel, and even lives in Eve's old Hollywood house. Sophie's dream is to make a film about Eve's life...and have Eve Noel appear in it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing, intense and immensely gripping... 22 Nov 2013
By Zarina @ Page to Stage reviews TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Movie star Sophie Leigh had a reasonably normal childhood growing up in Swindon in England, but you wouldn't be able to guess from her gorgeous mansion in the Hollywood hills, regular work-outs with a personal trainer to keep her already ultra-thin body in shape or the slew of gorgeous men she's rumoured to be dating at one point or another. Known for playing slightly ditzy characters in romantic comedies no-one takes her serious when she exclaims she wants to do something different, but Sophie is determined to show everyone that she's a better actress than she's been given credit for and at the same time fulfil a lifelong dream by making a film about her own screen idol, Eve Noel.

Eve was a glamorous actress in the 1950s who made several critically acclaimed films, one of which she was even nominated for an Oscar for. Yet despite seemingly having it all, she was deeply unhappy in the world of Hollywood and she disappeared without a trace after finishing her very best work, A Girl Named Rose. Sophie has seen Eve's films hundreds of times and practically knows the other actress' biography by heart. She's endlessly intrigued by the life of Eve and the mystery surrounding her disappearance, and as Sophie digs deeper into the other woman's past, secrets start to unravel and their worlds collide in unexpected and dangerous ways.

This novel was not what I was expecting at all, but in a good way. The present storyline at first reads like and average chick-lit with at its core a beautiful and perfect young woman, who despite her fame and riches is still very down to earth and sweet.
