Book Description

Life can be complicated. And complications are the last thing you need when a baby’s on the way.

But when Rebecca and James announce their joyful news, little do they know the road to baby bliss is far from smooth. Not only has James lost his job, but he can’t find another and can’t tell his wife why. Meanwhile Rebecca’s own family has picked the worst possible time to start to fall apart, and are relying on her to try and fix it.

As secrets begin to permeate their lives Rebecca and James end up wondering are they really ready to be parents after all…

But it’s too late now – and the expectant couple are about to learn that life doesn’t always turn out quite as you expect it.

More About the Author

Neal grew up in London, and the only real childhood hardship he knew was not being able to get a bedroom door sign with his name spelled properly on it. He knew he'd rather be a writer than an astronaut from the time he realised he didn't want a job that required too much travel. He has been an editor for spoof news website Newsbiscuit, written some jokes for BBC radio, and spent a short time as Britain's most unlikely private investigator.

Neal Doran now lives on the South West coast of Ireland with his wife and two sons, who still prefer their mum's stories to his.

He can be found on Twitter, usually when he's not supposed to be, as @nealdoran.

Neal also has a Facebook page, which he's not really sure what to do with: Say hello!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good, fun read 4 May 2014

I found this book was a real joy to read. Rebecca and James are expecting their first baby and are over the moon, really looking forward to the next few months of pregnancy and a beautiful baby at the end of it. However, when they announce their news to Rebecca’s parents, it is overshadowed by some shocking news that her parents in turn give them. This news will really throw a downer on their lives for the next few months and test their relationships with each other and their parents, especially when James’ parents get involved. And this is only the start of their troubles over the next few months.

Rebecca and James come from widely differing backgrounds, her parents are true blue conservatives, whilst his are hippyish left wingers, and I really love that difference and how it came out in the book. The writing is very witty, with a lot of one liners and I particularly adored the banter between Rebecca and James. It was incredibly funny at times and just felt so natural and normal.

There is quite a lot of use of the F word, and I know that a lot of people really don’t like it being used in books, but it does fit within the context in this case. If I had just received the news Rebecca had, I would have used that word as well.

There were a few minor editing errors, mainly missing words, but I am not sure if at some point the author was planning on Rebecca having twins, because a few times the baby was referred to in the plural, like “let’s get them out” for instance. However, it didn’t spoil the read at all, which was great fun to read.

I’ve always been a huge fan of male authors who choose to write romantic comedy fiction – mainly because the genre is dominated by female authors and a lot of the time we see things from a female viewpoint. I love seeing a man write in this genre and it’s such an interesting way to see a male take on life situations.
NWTWE follows the story of Rebecca and James as they find out they are expecting a child. This time of life is stressful for any new parent to be but when James loses his job and Rebecca’s family start to fall apart, they both wonder if they are truly ready to be parents. However, life doesn’t wait around for them and soon they are thrust into a brand new world and realise that nothing can ever really be what they expected.
I love Neal’s writing and his incredibly witty sense of humour. I’m not always a lover of humour in books – often it feels too false and scripted and too ‘thought out’. But Neal is not like that at all. The humour feels so organic and natural and as the characters strike up conversation between each other and insert witty remarks, I find myself genuinely smiling as I read. I would definitely consider this to be one of Neal’s strongest assets as a writer but he also has many others.
The plot and pacing are just perfect – the story progresses so seamlessly and there’s not one point where you get bored of the narrative. Neal has really perfected the art of storytelling and keeping an audience hooked on every word and as you come to the end of a chapter, you just HAVE to read the next one. Neal also writes with a very experienced and skilled hand – it feels like he’s been writing for decades and knows all the tricks of the trade and that makes him immediately stand out from others around him.

A couple of chapters into this book, I found myself in fits of giggles, with tears streaming down my face and the odd 'attractive' snort - that continued on and off through out the whole of this book.

Without revealing any 'spoilers', there were lots of twists in this story - just when I thought I had it sussed out and thought I knew what was coming, Neal threw in a curveball - there is a lot to keep you on your toes. Even the darker, sadder moments are peppered with 'appropriate' humour, which you can't help but smile at - a reminder to look on the brighter side of life, even in bad times.
Neal also tells this story from both James and Rebecca's point of view, which I thought was very clever and can't be easy for a man to do, but Neal did a great job (sorry men, but us women are complicated creatures and it takes a lot to understand what goes on in our heads!)

There are ups and downs, surprises, a lot of laughter, a bit of sadness - an emotional rollercoaster, which particularly parents or soon-to-be-parents will identify with.

Honestly though, it was the humour through out this book that got me - I haven't come across many books recently that have had me in stitches, and being pregnant with my second child myself, I was concerned I may have laughed my way into early labour at one stage - I laughed that hard!

I'll be checking out Neal's other book soon - if its half as funny as this one, I might have to wait until after I've had this baby - just in case!

Not What They Were Expecting is the story of Rebecca and James, two people in a happy relationship who decide to have a child. My wife and I have only very recently had a second child ourselves and so I can report that Doran hits plenty of notes here, with the result that the book is a fast, pleasing and, most of all, realistic read. As other reviewers have noted, there are lots of twists and turns but everything is very neatly tied up come the last page and it was with a sense of satisfaction that I put the book onto my virtual shelf.

Doran is a naturally funny writer and incredibly versatile to boot - one paragraph will be concluded by a brilliant gag and then the next will include a sharp and cutting insight into this most exciting time of life.

I loved his first book and I think I enjoyed this one even more. It's very highly recommended.
