5.0 out of 5 stars More Than A Woman 24 May 2014

This is a beautifully crafted and extremely well-produced semi-autographical play, written and performed in its entirety by the superbly gifted Katy Manning. Well, apart from the music and sound effects. Although, given just how talented she is, I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that she did all that stuff herself too.

I sent for this at around about the same time I persuaded my relatively short arms to plunge deep into my pockets and pay for Where on Earth is Katy Manning & Katy Manning's World Down Under. And the reason I felt so compelled to break the bank and send for them both? Well, that was a sudden and overwhelming feeling of admiration and respect for Katy Manning. Nothing (well, almost nothing) to do with my being especially envious of the outfits she used to wear as Jo Grant and nothing (well, almost nothing) to do with those snaps she had taken of herself naked and astride a Dalek - no, no, no. The fact of the matter is, I have acquired a list of stories (almost as long as one of my relatively short arms) telling me just how great she is. Most of them actually came to me from my two relatively short relatives (aged 6 and 9), who apparently pursue Ms Manning around the convention circuit, whereupon it seems they meet and greet each other like old friends. She is, without doubt, one heck of a classy lady.

Well...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful. More Please! 14 Sep 2013
The cover description of "A Grown-up Fairy-tale" is about as accurate a summing up as you could muster of the play. This is a manic and compelling journey through the "seat of your pants" life of Pansy Maude, whose life (for the most part) appears to have paralleled that of the exotic and multi-talented writer and star of the piece. Whether you know much about Katy's history or not, this is a moving, honest and completely absorbing encapsulation of a unique and carefree life that is spattered with laugh out loud moments and emotional resonance.

The fact that the host of colourful characters are all voiced by Miss Manning would be enough to warrant a listen on its own. Although I knew her as a talented voice actress, it's hard to believe some of the inhabitants of the play are really all coming from the same mouth; apparently done without the benefit of cutting.

I recently met Katy for the first time and I can testify the exuberance, warmth and affection you take away from the play are completely genuine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pansy Maude - Not a particularly Sane Woman! 6 April 2011
As the first in a new departure for Big Finish (Dr Who, Dark Shadows, Sapphire & Steel, et al, Audio Dramas) this disc needed to hit the ground running, stamping a distinctive style on the range, and if this is what the rest of the 'Drama Showcase' titles are going to be like, I am glad I subscribed!

Pansy Maude's rather erratic autobiography flips from Hollywood to Australia (and various places in between), covering adventures with her father in childhood, through to some of the more unusual acting roles she has done, filtered through the blurred miasma of extreme short-sightedness. By turns wildly hilarious or disturbingly dark, you are kept slightly off-balance throughout, as a picture of Pansy's life gradually emerges, with the ending, although predictable, completing the tale rather elegantly.

The whole drama is written and performed by Katy Manning (Dr. Who's Jo Grant/Jones), who freely admits that some elements are based on her own life experiences, although one hopes some parts are more fictional than factual. The audio presentation is up there with the best of Big Finish's work, adding to and support the story rather than detracting from it.

One minor niggle stops this from getting the full five stars - the language. I firmly endorse Big Finish's warning that this range (and this title in particular) is NOT suitable for a younger audience and I would caution anyone who has issues with strong language to consider the sheer quantity included here. And that is really what irritated me: yes, the story and circumstances would naturally engender such strong invective, but it should have been used to add impact when necessary, as opposed to flung in so often that by the end you don't even react to it.

I remember Katy Manning from Dr. Who, where I first saw her. She couldn't see well then, either, but it didn't stop her. There are parts of these stories that are definitely not for children, but adults will find it well worth listening, again and again. Ms. Manning really pulls us into her life. She speaks of ups and downs. It's not entirely clear to me what's fictionalized and what actually happened to her, but it's always a great story. You may find yourself laughing and crying by turns.
