3.0 out of 5 stars Factual, if not rather frightening in parts!! 10 April 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I bought this having become pregnant for the first time at 38. I was hoping for a comforting easy read to help me feel that 38 was not actually that old really to be having my first baby. I did find a lot of comprehensive information, much along the lines of most pregnancy and birth books, but some of the graphic details of the various problems for both mums and the developing foetus left myself and indeed my husband feeling quite anxious - he had to stop reading it as he was becoming so worried about me. I may have been lucky in having very informative and reassuring midwives and consultants, and I did end up with pre-eclampsia and stays in hospital, but I'm afraid I'm very glad that I didn't rely on this book to inform me. Sorry!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really worth the money 4 April 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The premise is good but this book fails to hit the mark. I think they misjudged the market. The sort of woman who might buy this book is more likely to be a first-timer. A woman with children already might be apprehensive about a later-life baby but obviously knows what having a baby entails. Quite a few of the illustrated cases featured pg women who already have kids. The layout is dull. There's not that much medical information and anything here is better presented in other pg books (e.g. 'What to Expect' & Miriam Stoppard's book). Overall I found the book a disappointment, lacking in substance and unimaginately structured. Borrow it from the library instead!

5.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, interesting, eye opener 16 Nov 2004

Format:Paperback
Bought the book a few months back. Found it facinating. It's all there. All my questions were answered and more. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone who's planning to have their first baby over the age of 35. The book is realistic and very reassuring for the "naive and paranoid" first time-to-be mums!
