Born in New York, raised in Chicago and caught in something of a musical time warp, Anastacia Newkirk is a soul singer with an incredible voice and a debut album that would be as happy in the mid-1980s as it is at the turn of the century. Working with producers whose credits include CeCe Penniston, Mariah Carey, Montell Jordan, Taylor Dane and Color Me Bad, Not That Kind is a collection of songs that relies on tried and tested pop tactics: big choruses, anthemic tunes and swaying ballads, rather than fashion conscious production tricks. Luckily, she's so stirring--especially with her Chaka Khan-esque vocals on the soul/funk title track, "I'm Outta Love", and on the Tina Turner-ish blues & soul stomper "I Was Made For Loving You"--that the shiny guitars, synth-basslines and pre-reinvention Whitney Houston overtones of power ballad "I Ask Of You" (which could have come straight off The Bodyguard soundtrack) pale into insignificance. Times have moved on and R&B has become more sophisticated, but infectious tunes are still any album¹s essential ingredient--and Not That Kind has plenty of them. --Dan Gennoe

All my friends say I'm obsessed with Anastacia which is true. I have all of her CD's and posters. I bought this CD in Australia a month ago and haven't stopped playing it. I'm Outta Love and Not That Kind are probably the best two songs although they're all good. I would really recommend this and Freak of Nature and Anastacia. ALL ANASTACIA FANS MUST HAVE!

Anastacia is a very talented artist, and this album shows that she is. The two hit singles, "I'm Outta Love" and "Not That Kind" feature in the album. The song "Cowboys & Kisses" is one of my faviourite ones on the album because the sensual sound make me feel warm. But the song that I enjoy the most is "Wishing Well" because this medium tempo tune has a real boost for waking you up, by putting it on in the morning i feel awake and ready to goto work.

Anastacia Newkirk,launch her first album "Not that Kind" full of energy, with R&B, pop, country, funky and rock influences. Her prodigious black voice inside a white and blond girl is a miracle. On the album you must find her most known song and first single I'm Outta love and other songs like Not that kind where we discover again the high quality of her voice, and Cowboys and Kisses nearest to the country sound. Definitely is an album positive and necesarious

Not that kind
We had an old copy of this CD which had been damaged so we ordered a replacement to continue enjoying it.

Ok, thought it would be better
Quite like this album but I did think it would be better than it is.

not that good - not that bad
50% of the album is good. Her voice is great on all of them. I particularly like the ballads on this album. I ask of you and One more chance are excellent. Read more

Good Debut
As debut albums go this one is one of the best. It is clear from the word go that Anastacia has a very powerful voice but she manages use it to make twelve very different tracks. Read more

Anastacia...second Celine Dion

Compelling music
This album is a genuine piece of music, and deserves to be the hit it is. The music is different to your usual pop and Anastacia has a unique voice which is a breath of fresh air. Read more

Only decent tracks are the two chart hits, the rest are dull
The two chart hits, 'Not that kind' and 'Out of love', are the only tracks worth listening to. The remainder of the album is sadly dull by comparison. Read more
