Book Description

19 May 2009
Sherry Thomas is one of the hottest new voices in historical romance, garnering the highest praise from today’s bestselling writers (“Entrancing.” —Mary Balogh; “Ravishingly sinful, intelligent and addictive.” —Eloisa James). Now Sherry delivers this powerful story of a remarkable woman and the love she thought she’d never find—with the man she thought she’d lost forever.…

Their marriage lasted only slightly longer than the honeymoon—to no one’s surprise, not even Bryony Asquith’s. A man as talented, handsome, and sought after by society as Leo Marsden couldn't possibly want to spend his entire life with a woman who rebelled against propriety by becoming a doctor. Why, then, three years after their annulment and half a world away, does he track her down at her clinic in the remotest corner of India?

Leo has no reason to think Bryony could ever forgive him for the way he treated her, but he won’t rest until he’s delivered an urgent message from her sister—and fulfilled his duty by escorting her safely back to England. But as they risk their lives for each other on the journey home, will the biggest danger be the treacherous war around them—or their rekindling passion?

3.0 out of 5 stars Finding love again 30 Sep 2009

Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have very much enjoyed Sherry Thomas's previous books 'Private Arrangements' and 'Delicious', but found myself a little disappointed with 'Not Quite A Husband'.

The story had many good points, including an unusual heroine (who is a doctor) and a setting in India. However it was also a dissatisfying story, in part because the motivations of the hero Leo weren't really clear to me.

Bryony Asquith married Leo Marsden, a man she had loved for many years, but when she discovered him being unfaithful just before the wedding it soured their new life and she left him. Now, several years later, her father is ill and Leo has been asked to fetch her back to see him. But Bryony doesn't trust Leo and can't forgive him, but as they travel together through India and into danger, she has to re-evaluate what she believed happened in their marriage.

Sherry Thomas has a good way with words and I liked the strength of her heroine Bryony but I was unconvinced by the love story - why would a man like Leo fall so hard for her? It wasn't an unputdownable book, in fact I read a couple of others at the same time as this one, and some of the scenes in the siege in India felt a little perfunctory. It's a good read but not as good as her previous offerings.

Wow & Wow! Where to start. I just love this book. It is the best book I have read for a long time. It is original and interesting. Bryony, the heroine, was 4 years older than the hero. She was a serious professional who grew up alone and had emotionally handicapped in the way that made her difficult to understood and loved by those around her. Leo is a romantic hero, who loved Bryony since he was a boy of 11 and aimed to achieve high academically in hope to match her achievemnet and be able to be noticed by her. I found both H/H believable. A passionately intense heroine who recognised her obsession in her love of the hero and a beautiful. A smart hero who is also vain and spoiled. Sherry Thomas wrote a wonderful story of young love falling apart due to H/H individual failings and were given a second chance when they are more mature and have better understanding of each other.

Sherry Thomas is a brave writer to go against the established formula of rakes and virigns in historical romance. She wrote historical romance story that are engaging and mold-breaking. The exotic locations, depth of the characters, unusual late Victorian setting are all there to enhance the infinately readable characteristics. All in all, a smashingly good book!

I've read two other books by Sherry Thomas and both were good in that sexy and steamy interactive way that you get when there are two strong lead characters and neither has much in the way of weakness but both have much in the way of strength and dominance.

Here, ST has altered the balance so that the reader comes to side with either the strong, seemingly flawless male lead, or the rigid, seemingly passionless, female. And then, she goes tilts the balance partway through just when you've settled on the realisation that there are serious flaws in this relationship and your natural inclination to sympathise with one side or the other is settling!! Chapter nine, that's all I'll say!

Up until Ch 9 I thought I was going to truly dislike Bryony Asquith and was wondering if I could finish the book - because I like to 'like' my characters. But, with a reveal in ch 9, more character traits emerged and some additional back history and suddenly Leo Marsden the male lead became more of a flawed man than a flawless god, re-balancing the character scales. And from that point on the reader is willing the couple to see beyond their history and make something of the very obvious spark they have.

There's less steamy sex in this that her previous two books but what action there is is written to fir in beautifully with the characters ST has so ably designed and described. In fact, I rather admired her for not overdoing the sex scenes yet still making me feel butterflies... that's good going 'cause I'm an avid romance reader and can yawn or even skip through soft porn scenes in many books.

The setting, 1890's British Empire India, around the years of the Indian uprisings is nicely defined and not as glossed over as many 'historical' writers who take on the so called Historical Romance mantle do. There are also far fewer Americanism in the writing making it a less than jarring journey. My reason for four stars and not five? I'd have liked a sub plot or even a couple more characters developed in here to grip me... that's just my taste though and the lack of those does not detract from a lovely story.

I'm delighted I've read it and it's going to go on my 'Keeper' shelf for at least one more go round...
