Product Description

The last person Bryony Asquith expects to visit her on the North-West Frontier of British India is Leo Marsden, the handsomest, most talented man she has ever met—not to mention, her husband before their marriage was quietly annulled three years ago.

Leo has loved Bryony since he was a young boy—and she the older, beautiful, coolly self-possessed girl from a neighboring estate. He only became more fascinated by her when, defying her genteel upbringing, she attended medical school and became a surgeon. Their marriage should have been a dream come true, not a silent wreck of distress and estrangement.

But now, with her father ailing, they must brave a perilous road through some of the most inhospitable terrains on earth. When a rebellion against the British Empire erupts in their path, they would risk their lives to ensure a safe passage home. But do these reunited lovers dare risk their hearts and fall in love again, when so much has gone wrong before?

Beautifully written and deeply moving, this RITA® award winner for Best Historical Romance of 2011 is simply one of the finest romances ever published.

3.0 out of 5 stars Finding love again 30 Sep 2009
By Helen Hancox TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have very much enjoyed Sherry Thomas's previous books 'Private Arrangements' and 'Delicious', but found myself a little disappointed with 'Not Quite A Husband'.

The story had many good points, including an unusual heroine (who is a doctor) and a setting in India. However it was also a dissatisfying story, in part because the motivations of the hero Leo weren't really clear to me.

Bryony Asquith married Leo Marsden, a man she had loved for many years, but when she discovered him being unfaithful just before the wedding it soured their new life and she left him. Now, several years later, her father is ill and Leo has been asked to fetch her back to see him. But Bryony doesn't trust Leo and can't forgive him, but as they travel together through India and into danger, she has to re-evaluate what she believed happened in their marriage.

Sherry Thomas has a good way with words and I liked the strength of her heroine Bryony but I was unconvinced by the love story - why would a man like Leo fall so hard for her? It wasn't an unputdownable book, in fact I read a couple of others at the same time as this one, and some of the scenes in the siege in India felt a little perfunctory. It's a good read but not as good as her previous offerings.

Wow & Wow! Where to start. I just love this book. It is the best book I have read for a long time. It is original and interesting. Bryony, the heroine, was 4 years older than the hero. She was a serious professional who grew up alone and had emotionally handicapped in the way that made her difficult to understood and loved by those around her. Leo is a romantic hero, who loved Bryony since he was a boy of 11 and aimed to achieve high academically in hope to match her achievemnet and be able to be noticed by her. I found both H/H believable. A passionately intense heroine who recognised her obsession in her love of the hero and a beautiful. A smart hero who is also vain and spoiled. Sherry Thomas wrote a wonderful story of young love falling apart due to H/H individual failings and were given a second chance when they are more mature and have better understanding of each other.

Sherry Thomas is a brave writer to go against the established formula of rakes and virigns in historical romance. She wrote historical romance story that are engaging and mold-breaking. The exotic locations, depth of the characters, unusual late Victorian setting are all there to enhance the infinately readable characteristics. All in all, a smashingly good book!
