Review

McKee's sly pictures are so delicious you want to gobble them up. A stark reminder that there is no such thing as quality time (Guardian 20040622)

The great thing about this, which is about parenthood, is that is so funny and unlike so many of the books I read to them, it makes me laugh too (Daily Express 20100430)

An attractive and enjoyable book about a common yet largely unrecognized problem of growing up. This books makes parents think. A modern classic (Big Issue - London 20111031)

1.0 out of 5 stars Bleak 25 Jan 2013
By Molly_M
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this for my 4 year old but after reading it will not be giving it to him. The story is bleak with no redemption. The boys parents ignore him and do not notice when a monster eats him and takes his place. The end. I thought it was horrible. Maybe contains a message for some parents but not suitable for children in my opinion.

I loved this book as a child and my children love it now. A womderfully funny but short book, making it suitable for smaller children. Mum and dad are so preoccupied with day to day life, they fail to spot that their son Bernard has been eaten by a monster and the monster is now masquarading as Bernard.

A real treasure this one- you won't mind reading it over and over again to your little 'uns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not now Bernard! 13 Nov 2006
Format:Hardcover
We used to read this most evenings before bedtime to both our children. For the children it's a story with a monster, for adults it's a sad story of a boy who's parents just don't have enough time to notice him. Great book and not too boring when you've "read it" for the 200th time! We now buy it for our friends children, so that there is a good book around if we get the honour of the bedtime story.
