Product Description

A pregnancy pact between three teenaged girls puts their mothers' love to the ultimate test in this explosive novel from Barbara Delinsky

When Susan Tate's seventeen-year-old daughter, Lily, announces she is pregnant, Susan is stunned. A single mother, she has struggled to do everything right. She sees the pregnancy as an unimaginable tragedy for both Lily and herself.

Then comes word of two more pregnancies among high school juniors who happen to be Lily's best friends-and the town turns to talk of a pact. As fingers start pointing, the most ardent criticism is directed at Susan. As principal of the high school, she has always been held up as a role model of hard work and core values. Now her detractors accuse her of being a lax mother, perhaps not worthy of the job of shepherding impressionable students. As Susan struggles with the implications of her daughter's pregnancy, her job, financial independence, and long-fought-for dreams are all at risk.

The emotional ties between mothers and daughters are stretched to breaking in this emotionally wrenching story of love and forgiveness. Once again, Barbara Delinsky has given us a powerful novel, one that asks a central question: What does it take to be a good mother?

4.0 out of 5 stars WHAT MAKES A GOOD MOTHER? 19 Feb 2010
By Gail Cooke TOP 500 REVIEWER
Single mom Susan Tate has done all right for herself and her daughter, Lily, now 17. The principal of the local high in Zaganack, a small close knit community Susan is proud of Lily who excels not only scholastically but also in sports. Truth be told, Susan might be even prouder of their mother/daughter relationship. They're close, honest and open with one another.

Thus, Lily's words were a shocker. "Susan never saw it coming. She only knew that her daughter was different. The girl who had always been spontaneous and open had suddenly grown opaque." She is pregnant. Hearing that confession from Lily and having the fact corroborated by a doctor brought back what Susan's mother had said to her years ago, "You've shamed us, Susan. What were you thinking?" She, too, had been pregnant in high school and refused to marry the father of her child.

Inspired to a degree by the Gloucester, MA pregnancy pact Barbara Delinsky has fashioned a riveting, emotion packed story about three high school girls who make a similar agreement. The effects on both the girls and their families are thoughtfully explored as each copes in a different way.

As the high school principal Susan is, of course, now at risk with some perhaps thinking she is not fit to lead young students. She has fought hard for not only her job but for financial independence. Lily's actions force her mother to re-examine the mother/daughter relationship, as well as the part she may have played in Lily's choice consciously or subconsciously.

Yet, at its heart NOT MY DAUGHTER is a story of love and forgiveness. Delinsky's characters are authentic, so real, and ultimately sympathetic. And her story line may lead some to discover just how many ways there are to be a good mother.

3.0 out of 5 stars it was ok 14 Jun 2011
By Sian Louise VINE VOICE
I cannot say I fully enjoyed this one as much as I wanted to, but I didnt hate it either.
A first for me from this author and I really was expecting more from it because of the subject matter, and it did start off well, but didnt get quite as good as what I was expecting.
I didnt read any previous reviews of this so didnt realise it had so many mixed reviews, so I went into this not knowing what to expect, but somehow expected more.

It wasnt the writing style so much, but the characters. I really did NOT like the characters of the young girls. I am only in my mid 20s but I do have sisters of similar age of the characters and I honestly do not think they are as stupid as the teenage girls are in this book. In fact I wanted to bang the girls heads together. I mean, babysitting as a summer job, how does that make you think you will be a good mother? I used to babysit for the kids in my street as well as my 4 younger me if anything it put me off kids for a bit.
But saying that I really enjoyed the relationship between the mothers, their friendship and how what their daughters did affected their whole lives. I thought it was extremely unfair how everyone attacked Susan but you couldnt help but understand where people were coming from.
The pregnancy pact is an interesting story angle and unfortunately probably does happen, but I would have liked to have gone into this in more detail. The conversation that took place between the girls and how they finally made up their minds to do it. Maybe it would have made me like them more but with the parts to this book, I couldnt relate and I didnt like any of the girls.

I wouldnt rule out reading any more of this authors books but I am not going to rush out and buy any either.

3.0 out of 5 stars Barbara Delinsky 8 Sep 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Good story. Delinsky is not Jodi Picoult but she writes novels in the same genre and is just as good. Not my daughter-the pact made by schoolgirls -not one of her best but the concept behind the story is very interesting and I found that I couldn't put the book down until I reached the end. A novel will automatically get at least 2 stars from me if it manages to keep me engaged all the way through to the end. Sorry Barbara I couldn't give you 4/5 but this work is definitely not one of your best and high standard we can expect of you.

I chose to read this book because I always like to try out unfamiliar authors and because I was intrigued by the premise of a pregnancy pact. Unfortunately the pregnancy pact idea, the only really interesting part of the novel, is mentioned only in passing and never fully examined. Delinsky never convincingly explains why three intelligent, well-balanced young women would decide to do something so daft, and this failure destoys the whole book.

The charcters are merely types - good mother, snobbish mother, earth mother, sexy journalist... Indeed Susan is so good - she never resents her absentee partner or shouts at her daughter - that it is impossible to warm to her.

(And of course the idea of 'abortion' is dismissed immediately without any discussion - such nasty things don't happen in the fairytale world Delinsky portrays.)

This is not a book discussing family life with honesty, realism and humour; this is escapist romance. And dull, predictable romance at that.

5.0 out of 5 stars nightmare 8 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Every Mothers nightmare to be told by your daughter that she is pregnant. The different reactions and emotions you feel will come out in the book. How the daughter feels and how her friends react including the mothers friends.

Its an indepth book, lots of twists and turns, keeps you guessing throughout, one minute you think you know what a character is going to do, then next, they surprise you.

If you are a mother who has a daughter, if you are a daughter that has a mother, read this book. Its excellent and no book has ever disappointed me by this author.
