Product Description

BBC Review

The 1979 six-LP collection The Complete Buddy Holly was arguably the music industry’s first ever box set. Until now, however, legal obstacles have prevented a comprehensive CD overview of the output of the Texas-born 1950s rocker who released material both under his own name and that of The Crickets.

Universal’s deluxe label Hip-O Select have exploited the extra capacity of the CD to the max in this six-disc, six-hour, 203-track extravaganza handsomely formatted like an American high school yearbook. Naturally all previously issued studio recordings – contemporaneous and posthumous – are included. In addition, we have tapes going as far back as Holly’s 14th year, rehearsals, demos, alternate takes and unvarnished versions of material previously only issued with unauthorised overdubs. In some cases, this material is newly unearthed.

As a listening experience, the set is schizophrenic. The juvenilia is predictably gauche and the fidelity of that and at least two of the demos is shockingly musty. And while one is reasonably happy to hear the multiple versions of the timeless Think It Over, four consecutive fumbles through a two-man Mona are patience-fraying even after factoring in the defence of historical interest.

But when one gets to the surprisingly large body of work issued in Holly’s three-year recording career, one is reminded all over again why he inspires the kind of devotion that makes this spotty, sprawling set commercially viable: the rip-roaring Rave On, the swaggering That’ll Be the Day, the guileless Everyday, the brawny Not Fade Away, the thrumming Peggy Sue, the swelling, sweeping True Love Ways – these and numerous other classics (the vast majority self-composed) pour out of the speakers with a freshness and vitality that utterly belie their half-century vintage. In any event, the main point of this collection is not listenabliity. It is what it is – the works – and in that sense is unimpeachable.

It’s almost too late: that many will be obtaining this set via RapidShare despite its reasonable £60 price tag indicates how time and technology have left the feet-dragging record company and their lawyers behind. Belatedness aside, in their passion and comprehensiveness Hip-O Select have done Holly proud – no mean feat when we are talking about one of popular music’s most innovative and inspired artists. --Sean Egan

5.0 out of 5 stars More complete than The Complete Buddy Holly! 20 Mar 2010
By James B. Spink HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I bought "The Complete Buddy Holly" six LP set from Richard's Records in Canterbury over thirty years ago I thought I would never need to buy another Buddy Holly recording ever again. How wrong I was! Buddy's fans have been well served with various collections over the last few years and this "Complete Studio Recordings and More" is probably as definitive and complete as any official Universal Music collection is ever going to be.

Rollercoaster Records and El Toro (interestingly El Toro is a famous rollercoaster!) have both produced compilations aimed at the fan and completist market, and made possible by the fifty year copyright law in Europe. Universal Music, through its Geffen imprint, has produced the "Memorial Collection" and the rarities set "Down the Line", while the mass market has the nicely remastered two disc set "The Very Best of Buddy Holly and the Crickets". So do you really need this six disc "Not Fade Away" set? I would guess yes if you're reading the reviews!

For the price of this set you could buy all the other collections I've mentioned, still have a bit of change left over and end up with a good selection of Buddy's hits and rarities. However, if you have the earlier six LP set or are a real completist then you will have to add "Not Fade Away" to your collection. Although not quite as satisfying as the earlier John Beecher and Malcolm Jones collection this set does have over 200 tracks and is nicely presented in book format with full, if rather clinical, track details, with some good photos and story.

For various legal reasons the 1979 collection was never released on CD, although it was a definitive box set in the days when box sets were usually the domain of the Reader's Digest! "Not Fade Away" is as good as it is ever going to get now, and marks the fiftieth anniversary of Buddy's passing in a fitting manner. If Universal Music had employed the services of John Beecher on this project there may just have been a bit more love built in to what comes across as a rather academic work. A little pricey compared to similar projects for other artists, but five stars for the content and recommended to anyone with a love of rock music or rock history.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Buddy CD Box Set 24 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD
One of my first four 78rpm records was That'll Be The Day in 1957, when I was 15. Since then I have continued to admire and collect his recordings. In 1978 John Beecher & Malcolm Jones issued the brilliant "Complete Buddy Holly" vinyl box set I have been waiting for the equivalent package in CD format. THIS IS IT! How many artists have had issued such a complete history of their recordings from the very earliest to the last? When people buy DVDs they seem to desire the "making of" and "outake" extras, well this is the CD equivalent. If you don't like the demo recordings or the overdubs, programme your player to miss them. THIS IS YOUR OWN MASTER COPY OF ALL BUDDY'S RECORDINGS YOU ARE LIKELY TO GET - MISS THIS AND YOU WILL REGRET IT!!! My only regret is - I wish John Beecher had been able to produce it. I know that there are the recordings of Buddy supporting other artists, but I can now sit and enjoy all of Buddy's recordings at my leisure knowing every song he recorded has been issued - OR HAS IT?

PACKAGING and SOUND:
Worldwide Buddy Holly authority BILL GRIGGS acted as consultant, while long-time R'n'B and Doo Wop champ BILL DAHL does the knowledgeable and hugely affectionate liner notes. ANDY McKAIE was compiler and co-ordinator, while one of Universal's top engineers ERICK LABSON (nearly 1000 mastering credits to his name - including most of the Chess catalogue) did the remastering. The sound varies as you can imagine from the barely tolerable (demos) to the sublime (official studio tracks). For the most part I found the transfers warm and beautifully rendered throughout - "Little Baby" - a lesser-heard gem from his debut solo LP "Buddy Holly" now sounds just amazing (lyrics above).

Niggles - as you tell from a photograph of it, Hip-O Select knew they'd a prestigious project on their hands and pulled out the stops packaging-wise. It is a lovely thing to behold. Having said that - if Bear Family had done this - the book would have been a work-of-art - and new 'Buddy' stuff would festoon every page. The book is lovely don't get me wrong, but it's over all too soon. Also - Page 20 has a full-page black and white shot of Buddy alighting the tour bus on 19 Jan 1958 in the snow and it's just eerily beautiful - I wish they'd used it as the cover art instead of the rather naff and safe choice they did choose.

Summing up - fans have waited years for a CD replacement of their beloved "Complete Buddy Holly" 6LP/6MC Box Set from 1979 by the wonderful JOHN BEECHER and MALCOLM JONES - and this tastily presented homage is the closest they're going to get to it.

What an artist - and what a legacy. Rave on indeed...

PS: For fans, I've created an album-by-album Discography referencing the entire contents of this box (took me a while that) - it's available in a detailed pictorial version via my Blog Mark Barry's Reviews... - or as a printed version in the first 'comment' attached to this review...
