Piano, guitars, sitar, oboe, tamboura and a church choir create the most beautiful music on this remarkable album. Höre, Der Du Wagst starts with the gentle sounds of sitar and piano for a slow brooding buildup, then the pace picks up with Das Schloss des Irtums where the guitars gain prominence and likewise on Die Umkehr. The real masterpiece is Brüder des Schattens, Söhne des Lichts with its hypnotic, repetitive melody line and its gorgeous sitar, piano and guitar. This magnificent piece is more classical than popular music and would not be out of place on a Steve Reich album in its minimalist textures. There is also a spiritual quality about it that evokes feelings of loss, sorrow and redemption. Together with the album Until The End Of The World, Nosferatu is my favourite soundtrack of all time. The music is never less than deeply moving, the epitome of grace and elegance.

The 'Nosferatu' soundtrack is one of Popol Vuh's most accessible albums, featuring several haunting melodies and evocative textures. Jangly guitars and sitars play a much greater role than usual too. 'Bruder des Schattens' is the dominant theme in the film and is even more effective in that context than it is here. Much of this album, however, isn't heard in the film. As is usually the case, it wouldn't all fit in. My favourite track is 'Die Umkehr', an intense guitar piece. The sitars work well on the 'Mantra' tracks although it isn't an instrument I would usually favour.

Popol Vuh were a perfect choice to score Werner Herzog's films, their feeling for a sense of anguish and melancholy matching the subject matter. 'Nosferatu' is, even by the standards of 'Dracula', on which it is based, a gloomy film. At over an hour, this is great value and a recommended introduction to a band who made music in many different ways.

This is a superb film score. The opening track is chilling. Then we have lots of sitars. (nice) My favourite track on this record is 'Mantra 2', this is so beautiful! Then 'On The Way', which is a dark reprisal of the opener and the main reason I brought this album. love it!

Ordered this expecting it to be the soundtrack from the film. It isn't, though there are some stunning pieces, but where is Wagner! Disappointing.
