Winner of the 2011 Howlett Literary Award (Sherlock Holmes book of the year) --The Sherlock Holmes Society of London

Product Description

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is one of the most written about men who ever lived but despite this some parts of his life get little attention. One such period is between 1891 and 1894 when he lived in South Norwood in present day south east London. During this period he wrote and published much of his best work including the first two series of Sherlock Holmes short stories. This book looks at his life during this period and, in contrast to other biographies, spends time looking at some of his input into local Norwood life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read and Brilliant Research, 22 April 2010
By
This review is from: The Norwood Author - Arthur Conan Doyle and the Norwood Years (1891 - 1894) (Paperback)
Three things struck me about this. Firstly, although I am not normally interested in this type of book, the style of writing draws you in so that you begin to get take an interest in the lives, trials and experiences of Conan Doyle and the others, the petty arguments, the cricket scores and, to me, the surprising and continual lack of regard Conan Doyle had for the Holmes stories.

Secondly, I can but admire the astonishing amount of work and time that the author has clearly put into his investigations, the hours invested to unearth small gems that must delight those with a greater interest in Holmes and Conan Doyle than I.

Finally, it is great that in carrying out the work the author has managed to bring a bit of Conan Doyle back to the people of Norwood, thus keeping a bit of history alive.

My thanks to the author for re-igniting my interest in Conan Doyle's books; I will definitely read some of his non-Holmes books/stories and will also try other historical books (of Duncans and others).

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner, 14 April 2010
This review is from: The Norwood Author - Arthur Conan Doyle and the Norwood Years (1891 - 1894) (Paperback)
Yet another masterful excursion by Alistair Duncan, this time into the world of Arthur Conan Doyle and the Norwood years. Extremely accessible to those with only a passing interest into the world of Sherlock Holmes's creator and very informative throughout to those who already know a great deal about this great man.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of reading this work and this book together with Mr Duncan's two other works, demonstrably show that he is fast becoming one of the leading Holmesian scholars of this age. Excellent and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and erudite, 22 Mar 2010
This review is from: The Norwood Author - Arthur Conan Doyle and the Norwood Years (1891 - 1894) (Paperback)
On reflection, I was surprised to realise that while I know a fair amount about Sherlock Holmes, I know next to nothing about the man who wrote his stories - no, not the good Dr Watson, but the shadowy figure behind both Holmes and Watson, Arthur Conan Doyle. So it was with a sense of genuine intrigue that I began to read The Norwood Author. Alistair Duncan is reported to be well placed to write about Conan Doyle and having read this book, I can see how he has acquired his reputation not only as a writer, but as a respected historian and scholar. The Norwood Author, which is written in a fluent, accessible style, reveals fascinating information about the life and times of Conan Doyle. I felt as though Duncan was joining the dots, explaining much about Conan Doyle and bringing his world to life... And not once does Alistair Duncan suggest that his book is a spoof because, of course, as we all know, the Sherlock Holmes stories weren't written by Arthur Conan Doyle but by a certain Dr Watson, who had first hand experience of these cases...
I highly recommend The Norwood Author to anyone interested in Sherlock Holmes and will certainly be reading more books by this engaging and erudite author.
