Product Description

In 1984, the charismatic Norwegian diplomat Arne Treholt (38) is arrested on charges of spying for the Soviet Union. He is ultimately sentenced to 20 years in prison. But Treholt was never a spy. He was a Ninja, entrusted by King Olav himself to lead a secret force of enlightened shadow warriors called The Ninja Force! Norwegian Ninja takes place in the time leading up to Treholt s arrest. The Ninjas discover that Stay Behind, a sinister NATO force created to battle the Soviet Union, are planning a coup-d'état in peacetime. The Ninjas must defeat the conspirators at all costs in order to keep Norway free. A love letter to 1980 s Ninja movies, Bond films, conspiracies and special effects, Norwegian Ninja is the radical feature film debut of writer/director Thomas Cappelen Malling

4.0 out of 5 stars Bizarre, comical, no need to take this seriously!, 4 Jan 2012

This review is from: Norwegian Ninja [DVD] (DVD)
This film deserves a high mark for being so absurd. Its a very bizarre film which is quite short (77 mins) and centres on Norway's very own secret army of ninjas. So surely thats enough to realise that the film doesn't take itself too seriously and is very much tongue in cheek.

At the height of the cold war, Norway is under threat from acts of sabotage and terrorism and only the Norwegian ninja's can stop it. The beginning of the film acts like a training course, introducing the ninja force at their idylic island retreat. As the story progresses, the ninja force are framed as being out of date and unable to protect Norway. Sinister plans are being executed in order to make the ninja force a thing of the past.

The film does seem a tad fragmented, jumping about from scene to scene without a real structure to it. But as long as you know what to expect (the title should give you some idea!) you will find it amusing at the very least. The main actors do a fine job in hamming it up as seriously as they can whilst also taking the p*** out of themselves to no end (especially bumblebee). The icing on the cake is the rather funky disco soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully seamless, 12 Aug 2011
This review is from: Norwegian Ninja [DVD] (DVD)
This movie is beautifully crafted. It's a satirical comedy that's in a cinematic style similar to Wes Anderson's "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou" and UK Channel 4 comedy "Garth Marenghi's Darkplace". The use of model buildings and 80's grainy footage really adds to the atmosphere of the film.

The storyline is based around real life events in Norway during the cold war which may give those Norwegians there at the time an extra chuckle.

The film is truly complimented by the music especially the electro-disco melody when things get exciting. The mood music for scenes is particularly well chosen.

The only negative point was that I wished it was just slightly longer but better to leave me wanting more I guess?

Don't take this film too seriously, it's meant to make you laugh!

I enjoyed this movie a lot. I think this has to be my favourite film of the year and could easily become one of my all time favourites.
