I was duped into thinking that this product will do incremental backups to DVD, allowing you to select which files and folders you want to back up and how often. It does no such thing. The only DVD backup option is to backup ALL files of a certain type (you can't pick individual folders) and there is no incremental option. I gave up when it got to 44% with 3 more hours to run. The recovery point option already comes with HP laptops preloaded and Norton adds nothing to that. Like HP, it doesn't back up to DVD, so you have to manually copy it over once it's backed up to hard disc. Do these software developers really believe we have all day to mess around with backups? Even if they run in the background, they are disruptive, stop you from moving the laptop around and slow everything down. I used to have a simple Iomega zip drive, where I could do a quick incremental backup at the end of each day. Now, the same procedure takes hours. So don't buy this, unless you're unemployed and have all the time in the world!

Not good with Vista 28 July 2007
I have used Norton Ghost versions 9 and 10 and both have given excellent results. I have recommended Ghost to a number of my customers and it has always been successful. I expected Save & Restore 2 to be just as good but also compatible with Vista, so you can imagine my disappointment when this new version seems to have so many problems.

Setting up the backups is very flexible and user friendly but the true test of backup software is how well you can restore the data when things go wrong. I have only tried this with Vista, it might work OK with XP. My PC normally has four hard drives so I took a full system backup of the Vista disk and tried to restore it in different ways.

Restoring to a single disk (tried this twice) - the restored system would not boot and had to be repaired using the Vista install disk.

Restoring whilst the PC was in the same configuration as when the backup was taken, i.e. with all four disks in place - The restored system again had to repaired using the Vista disk but Save & Restore also corrupted the XP disk and that had to be repaired using the XP install disk.

I then tried a small corruption of the backup file to see if the Norton detected this, it doesn't, but worse still it refuses to make anymore backups and just comes up with a vague error message.

I believe Symantec have rushed this product in an effort to get something out that is Vista compatible. Don't buy, wait for the next version.

I've used Norton products for years quite happily. Until now.

There are no two ways about it, this software simply doesn't work and technical support don't seem to be able to make it work.

I've not tried a restore yet. But backing up files and folders is a one off thing. Try doing an incremental backup and it just fails time after time.

Technical support gave me some XP instructions for clearing it which I was left to convert into Vista, but there was no point because it didn't work anyway.

Sorry, but I've now given up and had to accept I'll have to look elsewhere.
