Having seen a number of negative reviews on other web sites, it was after some thought that I bought Norton Internet Security 2007 rather than renew subscription to my previous 2005 version. I am not yet convinced I did the right thing. Although advertised as an "upgrade" it is in some respects a downgrade. Parental control and anti-spam are now not part of the package. Luckily my kids are almost grown-up and I have alternative pop-up blockers; but other prospective buyers may be less tolerant. The Norton product is incompatible with Microsoft Windows Defender (which must be uninstalled) and prevents operation of Windows Security Centre. This is not iapparent from the advertising or packaging. On the positive side, installation was very easy, protection starts up much quicker than my 2005 version, and a full system scan takes about the same time. I take it for granted that anti-virus and all the other security features work properly (they certainly did for the previous version) but what I see as misleading advertising plus inhibition of Microsoft security products means I can't give it more than 3/5. Buying from Amazon, incidentally, is much cheaper than buying direct from Symantec, especially when shipping is taken into account.

I installed the upgrade version as I already had NIS 2006 installed. The installation proceeded without problem and I've had no operational glitches since.

Comments:

1. The anti spam feature in NIS 2006 is not included in NIS 2007 so if you want to keep this feature, you should get an upgrade of the anti-virus component & not buy this. It does however pick up tracking cookies when a full scan is run & there is phishing detection capability (IE 7 also includes this capability) - no idea about the relative merits.

2. I've only installed it on one of my PCs so far. This had 18 days of unexpired subscription for NIS 2006 on it. I've currently lost these but am pursuing the helpdesk to get these reinstated. To avoid this problem, I suggest waiting until your old copy has expired. NIS 2006 which I had on three PCs did lose its unexpired life on about five or six occasions across the PCs which took a bit of effort to recover. I hope that NIS 2007 does not suffer the same problem.

3. It appears on a few days use to have less of a negative impact on the speed of the PC - NIS 2005 & 6 were recognised to be a bit PC resources hungry

I have used Norton Internet security (NIS) since 2002, with upgrades to 2005 and then upgraded to NIS 2007 in October 2006 - have had major problems since then. This IS the worst piece of Bloatware I have ever used. It slows down a fast Dell Pentium III PC and caused it to crash on numerous occassions. To remove it, the Norton Tech online team took control of my PC (as NIS 2007 does not uninstall easily, I tried without joy!) and they twice managed to crash the PC ("Blue Screen of Death"). I then had to TWICE re-install Win XP Pro. The Norton Tech team's response to this ? : "oh it is Dell's fault, contact them to help you" ! (Dell to their credit were fantastic, their Tech support team helped me get my PC recovered, took 2 days though !) Norton seem to blame EVERY other piece of software or PC hardware rather than acknowledge that it is their software that is the problem. Trust me, do NOT put this software on your PC, all may seem OK now, but if things go wrong, then God help you, because Norton will not. I finally removed NIS 2007 after the last re-install of Win XP after Norton crashed the PC. I have been using BitDefender IS v10. A great piece of software, quietly, quickly gets on with what it is supposed to do (NO connection with BitDefender, but good software deserves recognition). It does its job quickly, and secuely. I am crash free and Norton-free for 2 months now without any problems ! Also, it discovered 10 viruses and trojons that Norton 2007 missed !!!!
So why get Norton? Well if you want a nice looking piece of software that looks "sexy" and helps to slow your PC but does not actually DO effectively what it is supposed to do, then please buy NIS 2007. If on the other hand, you want a good, relaible, non-intrusive Internet security programe get BitDefender, or other such system.
After more than 5 years with Norton, I have lost faith with them, and will never get a piece of bloatware from them.

I have been a Norton user and a fan for the last 7 years, but my enthusiasm has taken a big dent with NIS 2007. Having encountered almost daily problems with the Anti Spam in NIS 2006 conflicting with Office Outlook 2003, I was told by their Sales Dept. that this had been overcome with 2007, and it mentions that it is O.K.with Outlook 2003 on their packaging! It comes as a free download from their website (free)once you find your way there! No problems installing as I had taken the precaution of downloading the information from the Symantec UK website and removed 2006 completely. However their effectuve Anti Spam add-in does nothing but cause havoc on a daily basis with my !Outlook! 2003. I get a message to say that Outlook has encountered a serious error and must close down. I am than informed that I need to close Norton Anti Spam as that is causing the problem so will I please disable it (though I can re-enable if I like!) Well I do like, and I am back at square one yet again. I have uninstalled and re-installed so many times I could do it in my sleep, but have got so fed up with Norton messing with Outlook, plus the fact that it is slow to load compared to previous versions, that I am now trying out Grisoft's AVG Internet Security 7.5. Early days, but I fear that my love affair with Norton may be finally over, and by the way there is a local rate UK Symantec telephone Support Line )Sept. 2004 "Which") because I refused to pay for something that was certainly not my fault!
