Eighteen-year-old Casper (Gustav Dyekjær Giese), who lives in the infamous Nordvest suburb of Copenhagen with his mother, brother Andy and sister Freya, is a talented housebreaker who makes ends meet committing burglaries for neighbourhood boss Jamal. When a rival gangster, Bjorn, makes Caspar an offer of more lucrative terms and, perhaps, the promise of advancement through the ranks of his very white Danish family , the enraged Jamal is not prepared to tolerate defection; things violently escalate, placing the teenager and his family at the centre of a toxic conflict. What could be a predictable genre tale is elevated far above the ordinary by director Noer s fresh script and restrained approach, and by Gustav Dyekjær Giese s natural and powerful performance. His remarkable stillness only serves to intensify Casper s inner turmoil.

18-year-old Casper wants to reach the top, no matter what. He carries out small-time break-ins for immigrant gang leader Jamal, before moving on to work for big underworld player Björn who specialises in drugs and prostitution. All goes well, until Jamal's gang decide they want revenge. What starts with pushing and shoving soon escalates into armed conflict. This is a big test for Caspar: is he ruthless enough for this battle? And will he drag his younger brother into it?

I'm not usually much for boys-at-war films, but I had heard that this Danish film was worth a view and I think it was really well made and quite realistic in the portrayal of Casper's quick journey from an accomplished thief to way over his head with organised crime and the actors all do really well with their roles. Like "R" which was also directed by Michael Noer, it is at times uncomfortable viewing, but also well thought through and well carried out.

Please note this product, 5708758696647, does NOT have English subtitles. It is Danish audio with Danish, Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish subtitles. Extras include a few deleted scenes (that are actually worth watching to understand some of the actions of the protagonists better), behind the scenes (only 3 minutes that work more as a trailer than anything), photo gallery, music video, teaser and trailer. All extras are in Danish.

Format: DVD
Set in Copenhagen this is a film about the Nordvest part of the city, which is a notorious centre for crime, drugs and ne'er do wells. Casper is a product of his environment and scratches a living doing break ins and selling onto a fence called Jamal. He lives with his lone parent mum, young sister and slightly younger brother Andy - they are brothers in real life.

Then he meets Björn, who is in a different league and decides to take Casper under his wing. He gets involved with prostitution, drugs and all the other paraphernalia that seems to be de rigueur for gangster types. Jamal though is not happy and seeks to teach the young pup a lesson. What starts off as macho bravado soon turns much darker very quickly with unforeseen consequences for all. None of that is a plot spoiler as its all in the blurb.

This is another great Nordic film that is original, in forms of script, and is made to extremely high standards. The acting is all excellent and from a virtually unknown cast - and that adds to the gritty realism. There is violence and other `adult' scenes but none is gratuitous. It is actually about the interplay and the relationships that control what people do in extreme situations. From director Michael Noer who also brought us the brilliant `R - Hit First Hit Hardest' - which is also well worth checking out. This is one that all fans of the new Nordic cinema will appreciate seeing - recommended.
