I'm very glad I bought this book. It turns out that it is certainly representative of the railways of Northumberland & Durham - both BR and NCB - from 1948 until the end of steam in the area. However, anyone starting at the beginning and working towards the end may become very frustrated because the 1st half of the book is biased towards the comparatively unimportant Pennine route over Stainmore - and the photos of that line are mostly in Westmorland. I'm assuming this is because of the photos available to the author rather than from any inherent bias. However the 1957-1967 section (approx 1/2 the book) more than makes up for it. This is precisely what the NE is all about. NER classes, NCB, BR standards, etc. lugging heavy freight over lines not necessarily open for passenger traffic (although that's certainly there as well). Towards the end of this section there are photos of diesel-hauled trains as well because the two forms of traction overlapped considerably. I'll reiterate what I said to start with: I'm very glad I bought this book. If you're an NE lad of a certain age go for it without question. Indeed ANYONE with an interest in industrial Britain will find it of value.
