Product Description

Product Description

A closer look at the landscape of the most violent and bloodstained piece of land in Britain reveals not only medieval castles such as Dunstanburgh and Hermitage, but also walled towns, peel towers, and of course, Hadrian's Wall. This collection of walks explores three sections of the wall, including the two best-preserved and most interesting Roman forts and most dramatic stretches. There are also bracing hill walks in the Cheviots, coastal walks along the cliffs and beaches of the Berwickshire and Northumberland coasts, river valley walks, and routes through countryside featuring woodland, lochs and reservoirs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent walks for all ages and mobilities, 20 April 2009

This review is from: Northumberland, the Borders and Hadrian's Wall: Walks (Pathfinder Guide) (Paperback)
Having wanted a book of walks in Northumberland I delved into this series having heard about it through word of mouth. I have to say that I haven't been disappointed.

The walks are split up into three categories - easy, medium and more strenuous - and are located on a map of the north east within the first couple of pages to give an idea of travel time and ways to get there.

The individual chapters on each walk start with a fact box that includes things such as GPS coordinates, overall distance walked, time taken to walk and parking places. Each walk also contains a highlighted route on a colour OS map along with some very detailed descriptive about each stage that the walk is broken up into.

This really is an excellent guide and for less than £10 it's a bargain. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent country, excellent book, 25 Aug 2007

This review is from: Northumberland, the Borders and Hadrian's Wall: Walks (Pathfinder Guide) (Paperback)
The pathfinder series of walking books I find are some of the best published. The maps in them are copies of ordnance survey maps and therefore easily to follow ( not like some walk books ). There is always a good variety of walks of varying length and ability. This book has the spectacular walk from Houseteads fort to Vindolanda along Hadrian's Wall... brilliant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good "Green Guide", 28 May 2011
This review is from: Northumberland, the Borders and Hadrian's Wall: Walks (Pathfinder Guide) (Paperback)
We like the Pathfinder guides because they are easy to use. Walks are divided into three groups: easy, moderate and challenging. The mapping is the excellent OS 1:25000 and the descriptions are pretty accurate. The latest editions also contain handy GPS grid references at critical waypoints. The book fits well into a map pocket. We always take along a full size OS map but it would be possible to use this guide by itself if necessary.
