Book Description

5 Jun 2013 Bradt Travel Guides (Regional Guides)
Tanzania has grown to be one of the top safari destinations in Africa. This new edition of Northern Tanzania focuses solely on the northern region and Zanzibar. This area accounts for a tiny fraction of the country's surface area but around 95% of tourist developments. Written by Africa expert Philip Briggs, the guide reflects the growing trend away from large lodges towards small exclusive eco-friendly camps in remote parts of the Serengeti and other major reserves. This edition is more critically selective than previous editions, detailing the best on offer in all price brackets. It includes new chapters on the North Coast and on the Usambara Mountains both of which offer good off-the-beaten-track travel opportunities, as well as an expanded chapter on Lake Victoria. There is in-depth coverage of Tanzania's wildlife including where to see tree-climbing lions, and a full-colour wildlife guide. Philip Briggs keeps readers up-to-date with the highly controversial proposal to build a highway through the Serengeti. Northern Tanzania is an essential travel companion for both first-time visitors and seasoned safari-goers.

As awlays the Bradt guide provides more in-depth and out of the way info to its rivals. We will be packing it for our travels and I highly recommend it. Also includes recommendations for more details options which is broad minded of Bradt. Essential first read in planning a trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guidebook for Tanzania travelers! 28 Sep 2013
By Kasha - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Having been to Tanzania 4 times now, I highly recommend the Bradt/Briggs guides to Tanzania, over the Lonely Planet books any day. If you are focusing on just the northern regions and Zanzibar, don't clutter your mind with other areas of the country you won't be visiting, and that is what this book is good for.
This book covers the 4 northern parks (Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, and Ngorongoro Crater), as well as Arusha, Moshi and Mount Kilimanjaro areas. Also includes Zanzibar. It is a good planning tool to assist travelers planning a safari, beach and/or mountain trip to the beautiful county of Tanzania. Worth every penny I paid for it: it is well-worn having been with me on all my trips to TZ. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the best Briggs/McIntyre choice for Tanzania 15 Oct 2013
By vlawrence5 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a fine travel guide to Northern Tanzania, but its contents appear essentially verbatim in the 7th edition of the Briggs/McIntyre "Tanzania Safari Guide" published at about the same time. Given that the latter title has about 160 more pages, covers the entire country, and currently lists at a lower cost on Amazon.com, it is clearly the better value. Do not be concerned that you would miss anything from "Northern Tanzania" were you to choose "Tanzania Safari Guide" instead - it is all there. Neither will you find extraneous information in "Tanzania Safari Guide" because of its broader coverage - the great majority of its text is identical with that of the "Northern Tanzania" guide. Bradt and the authors appear to have produced basically the same book with different titles in different covers. Regardless of your objective, I recommend that you make the safari guide your guide to Tanzania.
