Over the years Grand Central Records have consistently knocked out quality hip hop and funk whilst simultaneously capturing the talents of top US rappers to lend an extra dimension to the sound. Rae & Christian's debut LP evolved this sound into something entirely different. A fusion of underlying hip hop sensibilities with lush soul, great lyrics, inspirational guest performances and superb production, it's not hard to see why NSS was widely touted as the natural successor to "Protection".
Luscious deep soulful tracks combine with classy hip hop to create a superb balance. The different emotions contained in the music range from warm and euphoric to sinister and suspenseful. The edginess of openers "Anything U Want" and "SwanSong" grabs your attention straight away, yet just a few tracks on you're listening to lush soul. Appearances from YZ and QBall and Curt Cazal add extra class to proceedings, whilst GC favourite Veba supplies velvety vocal accompaniment to 4 tracks. The legendary Jeru the Damaja's performance on the rousing "Flip the Mic" is typically brilliant, as is the stunning soulful hip hop of "All I Ask". This album has it all - lyrics, beats, melodies, moments of drama, chilled-out elements, a range of emotions - it is unforgettably superb.
