Book Description

18 April 1991
Between Tuscany and Rome, between the river Tiber and the Mediterranean, lies a part of Italy known as Northern Lazio. The authors provide a guide to this region - its people, history, food, tradition and folklore. Originally the land of the Etruscans, some of their vast engineering works can still be seen. The region includes the Campagna of ancient Rome and St Peter's Patrimony - the first of the lands that brought worldly power to the Papacy. There are also a great many churches, castles, villas, paintings, sculptures and gardens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unknown Italy 27 Sep 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Most visitors to Italy think of Tuscany and Umbria. Yet there is a little known but perhaps even more beautiful area called La Tuscia. La Tuscia is mainly situated in Northern Lazio. This book is one of the very few books in English to cover the area. It is excellent. It mentions places that don't seem to appear on the maps. Buy it and you will be inspired to visit this beautiful area of Italy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide and resource! 18 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
A wonderful book - thoughtful, accurate, well-researched and invaluable for discovering this area. It's not Tuscany or Umbria, but it's a fabulous place to be based for a week or a month or more. So much to discover and so amazing to have this great book. Not much has changed in the region of Northern Lazio since it appeared in 1990. I have not been successful in finding the version in Italian but I would love to get my hands on it for Italian friends and travelers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful coverage of a great part of Italy 12 July 2000
By Stavros Macrakis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is obviously a labor of love. The authors know the area well, and in detail. They appreciate all the layers of culture, from prehistoric through Etruscan and ancient Roman right down to modern life. I spent a week bicycling in Lazio using this guide, and was never disappointed. In addition, you will want to have a good map (e.g. the TCI 1:200,000 map) and perhaps a restaurant guide if eating well is important to you.

This is a plain print book, with few illustrations or diagrams, but with a useful table to help you find places that interest you (e.g. Renaissance gardens).

A pity it's out of print.
