Book Description

23 Jan 2003 0192801562 978-0192801562
From the Plantation of Ulster in the seventeenth century to the entry into peace talks in the late twentieth century the Northern Irish people have been engaged in conflict - Catholic against Protestant, Republican against Unionist. Marc Mulholland explores the pivotal moments in Northern Irish history - the rise of republicanism in the 1800s, Home Rule and the civil rights movement, the growth of Sinn Fein and the provisional IRA, and of the opposition, the DUP, led by Dr. Ian Paisley. His detailed examination of the violent upheaval of the last century, epitomized by the killing of 13 civilian demonstrators on Bloody Sunday, culminates in the controversy surrounding the current ongoing peace process.

Over 300 years on, the question still remains: can two identities and national allegiances be accommodated in the same state without oppression, rebellion, or violence?

2.0 out of 5 stars Awkwardly written, poorly organized 28 April 2010

This was my textbook for Anthropology 199, Irish Studies. It's a very small book and I realize that by abbreviating the subject so much that something is bound to be lost. However, it's not for lack of detail but rather lack of cohesiveness that makes this book so difficult. Time frames jump around, the sentences are long and awkward, and the author seems to delight in his thesaurus. Rather than making the subject understandable, the awkward phrasing and unnecessarily difficult vocabulary make it unwieldy.

I had to read this book for a history of Northern Ireland class. I found it very disappointing because it assumed that you had a strong base knowledge of politics in N.I. I would have appreciated a break down of the political parties and the various groups. Without it I felt like I was reading the footnotes without the actual text.

It did however, use much clearer diction that the other books I had to read for my class. I appreciated that.

Bought for a class on Modern Irish History and this book offered a good starting point for many conversations in class and for papers.
