5.0 out of 5 stars northern exposure series 1 (1990-1991) 6 July 2005
beautifull comedy set in alaska, a new york freshman doctor gets stuck in alaska to be a doctor for four years to pay the medical grant back.
he gets sent to a 800 people village in the middle of nowhere
It is a beautifull comedy(but not a sitcom) , well acted well scripted and more importtanly with lots of charm without ever being gross, a class act.
the main atraction is the love/hate relationship of the doctor Rob Morrow with his landlady (janine Turner).
he represents the go getter newyorker with lots of ambitions and totally frustrated of him being conned to be in Cecily( alaska) for four years.
She on the other hand is a mixture of headstrongness and sarcasm but with a sweetside beneath (if he can find it that is)
the 2DVD are nearly six hours so it is also value for money.
All i can say is i remembered fondly this series when i was 15, i just saw it again at 31 and i am still charmed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best US imported TV servies ever 18 Jun 2002
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
Everything about NE is great, right from the ambling moose in the opening credits. Unfortunately, being originally shown on Channel 4, it didn't get the exposure it deserved, while many lesser series have received far more critical praise and viewing figures. This first series is the best, as you gradually get to know the offbeat characters such as the horizontally laid-back movie-obsessive red indian Ed, the ultra-cool ex-con DJ Chris and the most serene and astute Marilyn. Nothing is predictable or cliched about the characterisation or storylines, while the humour is nicely understated and never obvious. My only gripe with NE is that I think it should've ended with the departure of proud-to-be-Jewish, New York medico Joel as he was the pivotal character. For those unfamiliar with NE, imagine a less 'dark' 'Twin peaks' or a more rural 'Due South'. If you like those, NE is even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars some of the best drama on tv 27 Mar 2004
By A Customer
The first exposure I had to this wonderful series was the last episode shown on this DVD. I happened on it when channel surfing - and it blew me away. Ten years or so later, and it still stands out as one of the best hours viewing I have ever had.
Northern Exposure has been a long time coming to DVD, and I wait impatiently for series two, when it really got into its stride.
There are very very few things that I recommend totally and completely - but this DVD is definately one of them. Buy it, settle into it and ENJOY

5.0 out of 5 stars Please Sir, can I have some more? 25 April 2001

After years of Northern Exposure deprivation due to Channel 4's disgracefully dilatory attitude towards acquiring repeat rights (no, I didn't have the foresight to hoard taped episodes like some people!), this excellent value boxed set was as welcome as a frosty glass of beer at the end of a long hot day. All I want now is the second and preferably the third and fourth seasons on video as well! To my mind, the series didn't really hit its stride until late in season 2, as the makers began to realise what they could get away with in terms of non-realistic or magical elememts to the plot - remember Chris flinging the piano in his catapult, the men of Cicely running naked through town, Shelley's singing disease, Maggie's dead boyfriend Rick coming back as a dog? If this video release continues, we have all these to look forward to.
Even Season 1, however, has considerable charm, and not having seen most of these since the first UK transmissions, it was a nostalgic experience for me as all these 'old friends' reappeared. Re-seeing the first appearances of characters like Holling and Maurice was a bit startling - nostalgia had mellowed their memories and I'd forgotten just how brooding and sinister Holling was, as well as what a racist blowhard Maurice was. Chris has less prominence in the show than he later came to have, apart from the final episode of Season 1, the rousing 'Aurora Borealis', which also features guest star Alan Arkin as Adam the psychopathic chef.
By the time Northern Exposure was cancelled, it was, in truth, looking a bit exhausted - certainly the episodes after Joel returned to New York were below par. So it's nice to return to the beginnig and remind yourself what was so appealing about this series in the first place. I see from the other reviews posted here that many viewers appear to be of like mind, so let's let Universal know - we want more!

Anyone reading the marketing blurb about these series might, understandably, expect it to be all about a young doctor from New York who gets conned into spending several years looking after the medical needs of a bunch of country hicks in an Alaskan middle-of-nowhere. The pilot episode would confirm this simple analysis but after that the stories spread out into a vast area of local politics, individual lives, personalities, points of view, beliefs and philosophies. Joel Fleishman, the doctor, is one of the main characters but one amongst many main characters - all real, down-to-earth (and occasionally 'away-with-the-fairies'), interesting, entertaining, loveable characters. Each episode focuses on different, overlapping components of the community, the events and relationships that define and drive them, the way they perceive their lives and deal with their problems. Living in such an out-of-the-way and extreme environment, with raw nature right on the door-step - wild animals, long hard winters with days of complete darkness, summer days that never end, a mixed population of Native Americans, traditional woodsmen and mountainmen, and a selection of folks hailing from many other parts of the country, things happen in Cicely that don't happen in more populous and 'civilised' areas. Watching the series for the first time is riveting because all the ideas and situations seem so new and unusual. One of the things that makes the comedy element of these programmes so funny is that we suddenly see things from an unexpected perspective and that's one of the things jokes do: present the ordinary in a surprising way. There's a constant parade of unusual situations, strange solutions, surprising ideas. Read more ›
