Product Description

CD Description

This new album, celebrating the people and music of a very special part of England, comes hot on the heels of Jez’s recent nomination as “Folksinger Of The Year” in the prestigious BBC Folk Awards, and his last CD 'Jack Common’s Anthem' nominated as album of the year in the US-based indie-Acoustic Project awards. Having written some of the most widely-sung new folk songs of the last 20 years, recorded by the likes of Fairport Convention, Gordon Bok, The Tannahill Weavers, Cherish The Ladies, The Dubliners and scores more, Jez has chosen to delve deeply into his back catalogue of compositions for this new collection, revisiting many songs from his early albums, many of which have been unavailable for some time. The 20-plus new songs he wrote for the Sony-Radio Award-winning BBC Radio Ballads series in 2006 remain untouched, as Jez and the band move through 17 earlier favourites. The “Song For Geordie" repertoire delved even deeper, in an attempt to put a bunch of Jez’s songs into context with a long tradition of North Eastern “Geordie” songwriters, stretching from historical figures like Joe Wilson and Tommy Armstrong (the latter called by Ewan MacColl “the father of modern protest song”), to more recent local heroes like MarK Knopfler, Alan Hull and Ed Pickford. The DVD included with the new album visits all of these writers, along with stunning footage shot by local people and communities who have known their fair share of good times and bad times, and yet have always had plenty to sing about. The music of Jez Lowe has now taken its place alongside these stalwarts of song, as the region looks forward to the future. Tracks: A Call For The North Country / Cursed Be The Caller / A Dream Of Steam And Freedom / The Boys Of Belly Row / Mary Martindale / Too Up And Too Down / A Hard Life / The Famous Working Man / All Trawl / Davis And Golightly / Bait Up / I’ll Never Get Home; The Old Durham Waltz / The Sun And The Moon And Me / Chick Henderson’s March / Northern Echoes / Fun Without Fools / Swiss Reel / The Honest Working Way

The songs and musicianship are absolutely superb and comprise a mixture of old and new (new to me) material. Even the old songs such as Cursed be the Caller, are enhanced by new arrangements. Jez is almost like a local historian and chronicler of the working man. A superb song is The Boys of Belly Row which tells of the hard working conditions down a coal mine. Just Jez's voice and Andy May on piano, the melody is magnificent and the words so poignant. Other great songs are Too Up and Too Down and The Famous Working Man which is my personal favourite. A wonderful set of songs and performances which I would award ten stars if that was possible. Buy this and listen to a master storyteller and musician.

I bought this album after seeing Jez Lowe with Kate Bramley(one of the Bad Pennies live at a concert.
This album has not been off our player since. A superb set of songs, includes a few older ones. He kept us enthralled in his live set and this CD was a great souvenir. IT also includes a great DVD containing about a dozen songs, so is great value for money.
If you'rre a Jez Lowe fan you'll love it, but if you've not come across him before, give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Jez Lowe is a modern day minstral and this superb offering catches him and his talented band the Bad Pennies in top form. The many and varied self penned songs on this CD showcase both his ability as not only a superb lyricist but someone who can literally paint pictures of his native northeast in haunting melodies and humourous verse. If you haven't heard much of Jez there is no risk involved in buying this, just sit back, listen and enjoy the work of a singer / songwriter who's talent deserves much wider acclaim.
