3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting to begin with but the stories become repetitive., 8 April 2002
By A Customer
' A Northern Childhood' follows a boy in the 1950's from his childhood to the end of his teens. It provides an insight into his emotions, concerns, successes and mistakes. We see him face common problems among people of his age and he tackles them. Many themes run through the ten stories including bullying, foolishness, friendships, love and families.

The first story, 'The Balaclava story', is an excellent opening to the book, with the narrator trying to fit in with his surrounding school mates. It had an ingenious twist in the middle and you only fully understood the story at the end. Running through the next few stories you were able to see the narrator's maturity grow.

But if only the author had kept the standard of the first story, the book might have been a little better. Unfortunately the stories in the middle of the book have little originality. The narrator is depicted as an idiot far too many times and you can even successfully predict the endings. It seems that only two or three of the tales have a happy ending for the narrator

The final story has the narrator flunk his 'A' level test, mess up his future and become a failure. Although it is quite funny to see the narrator slip up now and then, this is just ridiculous. You want to see the narrator do something right in his life.

After reading this book I thought that it was lacking that happy ending that some people want. I only found 'The Balaclava Story', ' The Long Walk' and 'The Mile' enjoyable. The other plots were simply photocopies of each other .
