Product Description

An epic Oscar winning film shot in glorious Technicolor by Cecil B. DeMille, in which Louis Riel (Francis J. McDonald) tries to organize Indians and French settlers into a fighting force that will battle against the ruling British and the North West Mounted Police. One of Riel's associates, Jacques Corbeau (George Bancroft), is wanted for murder and is being pursued into Canada by Texas Ranger, Dusty Rivers (Gary Cooper). Rivers joins up with the Mounties to pursue his outlaw but then falls for nurse April Logan (Madeleine Carroll), the beau of a stiff upper-lipped Mountie sergeant, Jim Brett (Preston S. Foster). But events overtake their rivalry when the rebels obtain a Gatling gun and April's brother, Ronnie Logan (Robert Preston), also a member of the North West Mounted Police, falls in love with Louvette (Paulette Goddard), a fiery vixen and half-breed who is Corbeau's sister.

This is a really good old movie with very colourful characters. I only had a copy of an old video that had deteriorated a lot. I had copied it from TV quite a few years ago. This DVD was so good to view it in such lovely colour. It was very entertaining and Gary Cooper is always such good value plus some favourites of mine, Robert Preston in particular and Madeleine Carroll... What a beautiful woman she was.
Not being Canadian I don't really know how accurate the historical facts are but it basically was Gary Cooper, A Texas Ranger in Canada searching for a wanted man who absconded from the USA over the border to Canada. He seeks assistance and information from the RCMP and this of course brings about some friendly rivalry between Gary and the Mountie played by Preston Foster over the attraction both men have for Madeleine Carroll's character, and she is the sister of Robbie (Robert Preston) It is about the French and British struggle for power and all the personal problems involving Robbie and a French Canadian girl played by Paulette Goddard.
The famous Indian Chief Pontiac is played (against type) by Boris Karloff. Strange casting I thought but it seems to work OK.
I am sure anyone who liked these actors would really enjoy this movie

One of Gary Cooper's best. In the cover scene, "Dusty Rivers" faces down Corboux with empty sixguns in his holsters. Of course the Mounties in their red tunics upstage Dusty, and a stolen "Gatling Gun" upstages them both.
I also liked the banter between Scotch and French half-breeds. This movie isn't Politically correct today but didn't need to be when it was made. Nice slice of Early NWMP history served with De Mille flair.

Wonderful Movie 11 Feb 2011
Format:DVD
I can`t praise this movie enough. The quality was brilliant I defy it to be better on Bluray which I still feel is overated and another opportunity to overcharge people . The red coats of the mounties and the scenery was excellent. One of Gary Coopers finest hours plus great support from Preston Foster, Robert Preston & Paulette Goddard. Also watch out for future stars Robert Ryan, Rod Cameron & Richard Denning..A WONDERFUL MOVIE
