Terrific Indian adventure,

This review is from: North West Frontier [1959] [DVD] (DVD)
Kenneth More is a British Army officer charged with taking a young Hindu prince to safety from Moslem rebels seeking the prince's death. With him is Lauren Bacall as the prince's American governess. They are obliged to make use of an ancient steam engine to take them on the hazardous journey. More and Bacall are both excellent in their roles, and there are great performances too from Wilfrid Hyde White as a dithery elderly bachelor, Urusla Jeans as a courageous Memsahib, Eugene Deckers as a sauve arms dealer, and Herbert Lom as a Eurasian journalist with a chip on his shoulder. The best performance in the film though is by I.S. Johar as the engine driver devoted to Victoria, his rusty old engine. Their hazardous journey is almost unbearably exciting, with one peril after another to surmount, not to mention the possibility of a traitor in their midst. The best line in the film comes at the end, where I.S. Johar is being carried off wounded and says triumphantly to Moore "they said Victoria was finished, no good except but for shunting, let them speak now. We showed them!"

An absolute blast of a film now given a DVD it deserves!,

This review is from: North West Frontier [1959] [DVD] (DVD)
In one of my favourite action/adventure films, Kenneth More gives one of his best-ever performances, ably supported by a sprightly supporting cast including Lauren Bacall and the inimitable Wilfrid Hyde-White. The direction by J. Lee Thompson (The Guns of Navarone) is lean with little pause for breath or thought and the action scenes themselves put a lot of other films to shame! The picture quality on this DVD is leagues ahead of the VHS; its pin sharp, in its original CinemaScope 2.35:1 aspect ratio but sadly not anamorphically enhanced. But as this is the first time I've seen it in its full widescreen glory I'm not complaining! One to keep and treasure.

Classic British Adventure,
This review is from: North West Frontier [1959] [DVD] (DVD)
From the day as young boy when my late father took me to see this film on the cinema when it was first released, it has always stuck in my mind, for the "Indian English", spoken by the engine driver played by the Indian actor I S Johar.Set on the Northwest Frontier of India in the days of the British Raj, Kenneth More plays the role of a British officer, tasked with taking a 5 year old Indian Prince to safety, 300 miles away from the a town under siege by rebels to safety. With the last train already gone,Keneth Moore discovers an old railway engine driven by Gupta(I S Johar),It's Indian engine driver. The story them revolves around, the breakout, of the train from the beseieged town, and It's subsecquent journey to safety. Several other well known actors, Herbert Lom, Lauren Bacall, and Wilfred Hyde White, contribute to various sub plots within the the main story. If there's anyone who's not seen it, and you love a classic British adventure, this is it!.
