Product Description

Barristers. They are young, educated, soft on the inside, hard where it counts. Don t let the wigs fool you, when you stand alone in court, when your life is on the line, these are the people you want between you and the jury. The North Square chambers are finding their feet, fighting for a large piece of the criminal justice business in Leeds. Working for his barristers or maybe the other way around is their manipulative chief clerk. Ruthless, obsessive, with a razor sharp mind and a cosh-like sensibility, Peter McLeish loves the business and the business loves him. Featuring a powerhouse cast including Phil Davis, Rupert Penry Jones, Helen McCrory, and Kevin McKidd, North Square, first broadcast on Channel 4 in 2000, is a gripping legal drama that takes you into a closed world steeped in tradition and blows it wide open.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten Gem Finally Released 5 Feb 2012
Format:DVD
I remember this series with great fondness. Together with the likes of GBH, North Square was produced by Channel Four. Unlike AB's series, it could have been continued and was cancelled because of some damned fools, choosing that they didn't want such dramas, (termed as being too American at the time) on their channel. As has been said, it could have been budgetary concerns, but whatever the reason North Square remains one of the best series C4 ever produced.

Look at the cast and people behind the series. People who are now household names started on NS and the quality shines through every episode. In fact, series like Silk probably wouldn't exiist without NS. So, if you like quality legal dramas, fine acting, great plots, etc. buy this series. If only they'd stuck with it, I'm sure it could have run for years. As it is, it goes down with other missed opportunities, foiled by the people who went on to make Big Brother and Coach Trip.

5.0 out of 5 stars You only need 2 words to recommend this: Phil Davis 30 April 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I remember thinking at the time how typically wrong-headed it was of C4 finally to give the magnificent Phil Davis such an excellent platform, only to pull the plug after one series! Viewing it again following the long-awaited DVD release, I'm simultaneously gratified and frustrated all over again. This superb and criminally underused actor is the heart, soul and icing on the cake of what is already a beautifully written and staged ensemble piece. The edgy humanity of the character he's called on to embody, plus the dialogue he's given and his delivery of it: these are pure joy, quite stunning. Indeed, a great cast and witty script move things on engagingly across the whole season towards a stunning revelation regarding Davis' character and an exquisite show-down with Helen McCrory. It really is a fine, if all too short-lived, example of great UK TV and, as I said, proof if anyone really needed it of just how much range, authority and charisma Davis has at his disposal. How any exec could think North Square "too American" with someone as authentic as Davis at the core is beyond me. Yes, it does have affinities with US output - but that's with the high quality stuff that so often eclipses our home-grown efforts. All the more tragic, then, that North Square had such a short outing. Still: there's plenty to savour here, so let's just be grateful for that.

Update March 2013 - In a recent article referring to his own Oscar success, Daniel Day-Lewis ranked Phil Davis as one of his favourite actors, alongside Robert De Niro, Meryl Streep and Marlon Brando. Quite right, too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Just terrific TV 5 Feb 2012
Format:DVD
North Square was gripping, funny and pretty much all of its alumni have gone on to great things over the past decade because it brought together a crack team of young thesps plus Phil Davies. The writing was sharp and witty, and I've checked with barrister friends: it is certainly tweaked and twiddled, but actually, yes, there is a valid depiction of how our legal system works.

Really worth the time and such a shame that the new head of Channel 4 just took against it and pulled the plug on the show. I can't remember of the name of the person in question, but it was a woman who must have had her head in a very dark place. This was a terrific piece of original drama and a shame that we have had to wait until Silk to get the basic premise back on the box.

This is one of the worst series I have ever seen. I thought it would be similar to Silk, but it is nothing like it.
