4.0 out of 5 stars North and South 25 Nov 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I only recently came across the name of John Jakes whilst reading the back of a video (for the North and South tv series that I haven't seen). I have always been interested in the American Civil War and as I have exhausted the books from my favourite authors decided to give him a go.

I was surprised at how quickly I got caught up in the highly addictive storyline. All of the main characters (even the necessary but irritating ones) had me captivated to find out what would happen to them next. If you are going to read this book set some time aside as it is exceedingly difficult to put down.

My one regret is that I only got the first book (wanted to make sure I liked it before buying the set) and I want to be reading the second book now as I need to know what happens next. Well worth your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read 12 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Having read the kent family chronicles,it was very easy to get into the swing of this equally compelling triology. Definite read for anyone whether young or old.American history is heaven on earth for historical writers but no one writes a novel better than John Jakes. You'll never put it down until the last page is turned.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL 30 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
When I was a little kid, I used to watch the TV series. While reading the book, I went back to those days. All I could say that the writer creates a wonderful atmosphere of that time, and you imagine yourself like one of those characters. You should read yourself to make a critique, but surely it will not be any different from "Thumbs up!".
