Product Description

North Slope is a barren desert of ice in Alaska that stretches from the Brooks Mountains to the Beaufort Sea, frozen during the winter clear to the North Pole. It is in this wilderness that the Fyffe Oil Company struggles in its search for oil. Andrew Fyffe, owner of the company, finds time and money are running out. On the rig a man has been killed; suspicion and fear are rampant among the drilling crews as they continue their superhuman efforts before Fyffe goes bust. The one man who (Fyffe believes) can save the company is McKinnon, once a famous wildcat oil man, but now a drunk, a drop-out. Fyffe kidnaps McKinnon from a drinking spree and flies him up to the oil rig, Fyffe One. When McKinnon sobers up he quickly sees he will need all his old resourcefulness, skill and courage to save the rig from catastrophe. The violent action of this story takes place against the background, strongly conveyed, of Alaskan Arctic winter and night. The rig and its crew confront dangers from temperatures far below zero, from fire, and from a subtle and complex intrigue ruthlessly executed by men whose objectives do not include the welfare of Fyffe One. This first novel tells a powerful story with conviction, a story to spellbind the reader and a mystery to be solved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ice Cold Thriller, 2 May 2003
This review is from: North Slope (Hardcover)
Described in the Financial Times as a "Gifted Narrator", Michael Parker takes his readers into the ice cold world of the Arctic where a ruthless killer stalks the oil camp of financially crippled oil Company, Fyffe Oil. In a chilling race against time, the only outfit left drilling in the icy desert wastes of the North Slope struggle to overcome tempestuous storms, fire and murder. The chief driller, McKinnon, dragged from the desperate world of alchohol, is the only man with the will to overcome these odds. In a challenging, well researched story, Michael Parker leaves the reader breathless and chilled with the race to strike oil at an almost unattainable depth, where the world's leading oil Companies have failed. The technical background to this novel is based on true events and leaves the reader in no doubt that man's toughest challenges are always in the most extreme places.

NORTH SLOPE. A REVIEW

A world of cold, a world of nothing but frozen ice, darkness and biting winds. Into this Michael Parker has woven a novel that reaches into the marrow bone of the reader as hard men battle against the elements and murder to find oil beneath the frozen wastes of the NORTH SLOPE in Alaska. Joshua McKinnon is dragged from the bars of Fairbanks by oil boss, Andrew Fyffe in a desperate gamble and race against time. McKinnon is a drunk, a drop-out; recognised as a failure by the people in the oil game. But up on the Slope as Fyffe Oil battle against the elements, one man, a murderer is out to stop them, and there is only one man who Fyffe believes can save them: McKinnon. This is story telling of the finest order. It is gripping, tension building. A page turner that you will not want to put down. Will McKinnon find the oil before the lease expires? Will he find the cold blooded killer whose only aim is to stop him? And as McKinnon learns more about the Slope, about the hardships, and the dramas, he is forced to battle not only the unseen killer, but his own demons. This is hard adventure of the highest order. This was Parker's debut novel, and received high praise from many places. A genuine, thrilling adventure that could be compared to the finest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping! Couldn't put it down., 9 Dec 2010
This review is from: North Slope (Paperback)
This is a re-release of one of Mick Parker's older stories, but it just as exciting to read it today as all those years ago. It's an adventure thriller in the grand style: a hero risen from the depths of drunkeness, bleak and hostile conditions, a race against time and weather... and a cold blooded killer on the loose who will do anything to thwart their drilling for the Black Gold.
A classic read, highly recommended.
