Book Description

25 Feb 2006
This is a beguiling epic of magic, love, loss and betrayal based on the traditional fairytale "East of the Sun, West of the Moon". The lyrical writing and bold sweep of the story as Rose travels north will cast a spell over every reader. "A rich tapestry that will resonate with readers...The stuff of epic tale-telling, replete with high drama and compelling characterisations." - Booklist. Rose was born into the world facing north, and as a north child, superstition says that she will be a wanderer, travelling far from home. This prophecy is fulfilled when she is taken on the back of a white bear to a mysterious empty castle, where a silent stranger appears to her night after night. When her curiosity overcomes her, she loses her heart, and must journey to a land east of the sun and west of the moon to reclaim it.

5.0 out of 5 stars North Child 7 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is one of the best books I have ever read if not the best. It is brilliant and the author must have spent a long time finding out about these strange superstitions. It was based on the Scandinavian fairy tale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon". Everyone who can read should read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great glimpse into the fantasy world of Norway 2 Jun 2006
Format:Paperback
Being norwegian I was drawn to the cover of this book right away, recognizing it as a picture from my favorite fairytale! So obvioulsy, I had to read it. And I do not regret that choice! The story is moving, well written and full of funny little Norwegian trinkets, words and mythic lore. My favorite fairytale blown into full scale novel. How can I argue with that?

It's a moving love story, based upon the typical "beauty & the beast" storyline, but it is SO much more than that. If you like fairytales, if you like nordic myths, then read it. You wont regret it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant for young readers and grown ups 28 Feb 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I just enjoyed this book so much. My daughter who is 12 cried and wouldn´t stop reading, when she read the book and I had to read the book. It was brilliant even for a grown up who is not too old for fairitales. However I did find some of the socalled Scandinavian words funny- a bit American in its aproach.
