5.0 out of 5 stars This is a well written and comprehensive guide..., 20 Feb 2000
By Allan M. Gathercoal "fdoamerica" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: North Carolina Handbook: From the Great Smoky Mountain to the Outer Banks (Moon Travel Handbooks) (Paperback)
This first edition is surprisingly well written and comprehensive. North Carolina Handbook should be a welcome guide for anyone desiring to visit or just know more about North Carolina. Moon Travel Handbooks have been around for 25 years and are best known for being the guidebooks for adventurous travelers. Moon Travel Handbooks excel in their historic and cultural focus, their significant coverage of flora and fauna and are especially welcomed by this reviewer for their maps and clear directions. North Carolina Handbook is no exception to these trademarks. Especially impressive for a first edition is the comprehensive coverage that Rob & Jenny give to the history of this fascinating State.

I checked out various recommendations and found all to be right on the money. I would not hesitate to rank this guide among the best for North Carolina. Highly Recommended

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overall, but light on the Southern Outer Banks, 1 May 2000
By Michael Kmiec - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: North Carolina Handbook: From the Great Smoky Mountain to the Outer Banks (Moon Travel Handbooks) (Paperback)
Although a good overview of the historical shaping of North Carolina, I was especially thrown by the lack of attention given to the Southern Outer Banks. It would seem that Avon, Buxton and Hatteras are so unimportant that they don't even need a map in this work.

The text on these towns is also fairly short, a glaring omission in a book that points out (with text and maps) various attractions along Hwy 12 along with milestone markers for the Northern Banks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible, Evil, No-Good Book, 27 Oct 2001
By GD - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: North Carolina Handbook: From the Great Smoky Mountain to the Outer Banks (Moon Travel Handbooks) (Paperback)
This is the most horrible book I've ever had the misfortune of laying my hands on. Why? Because it gives unbelievably bad directions. I dont't think the authors have ever been to N.C. My husband and I were in Charlotte for only 3 days and this book led us on a wild goose-chase for an entire afternoon. This book directed us to go east on I-85 for 20 miles to find the Schiele Museum...well it turns out the museum was in the other direction. The next day we consulted the book on how to get to the Latta Plantation. We were told to take I-88, but there is no I-88 in Charlotte. Avoid this book like the plague.
