Johnny Horton was one of Country musics great artists. During the 1950s he cut some of the best honky tonk songs of the period, and coupled that with his gift for ballads and then lastly the history or story songs.
This 2 CD from Jasmine contains 60 tracks and draws material from Johnny Horton's time with Briar, Mercury and Columbia. Most people will probably be attracted to this release for his history/story material, but the great thing about this 2 CD set is that you get the early honky tonk recordings in abundance. Honky Tonk Man is a great song, revived by Dwight Yoakam, but this original stands the test. Johnny's uptempo songs like Train with The Rhumba Beat and the S S Lureline are beautifully performed, and the sound is superb.
Most people though, will want his hits that he recorded for Columbia towards the end of his life. They are all here, When It's Springtime In Alaska, Battle of New Orleans, North To Alaska, Sink The Bismarck, but if you like these Columbia hits, you also get his lovely ballads he recorded at the same sessions, like Whispering Pines and All For The Love Of A Girl.
Johnny Horton was some artist, but what he really liked doing was fishing in the Louisiana bayous. The music business intruded, and fishing was his escape, hence his nickname the Singing Fisherman.
Johnny Horton was a performer who rose from the period when all up and coming Country singers tried to sound like Hank Williams. Johnny was a friend of Hank Williams when they both worked on the Louisiana Hayride. He did create his own distinctive sound though, and after Hank Williams death, he maintained one more link with the Great Man; he married Billie Jean, Hank's widow in late 1953.
Sadly Johnny Horton's career ended just when he was having real success.

Wonderful and marvelous voice with all Johnny Horton songs, Many songs I have never heard off but I know I will enjoy as I have before with his other albums. I will sit down and listen to the sounds with delight knowing what a great bargain I have brought which I will always treasure. Time for the munchies and entertainment and relax for a while

There's nothing I can write about Johnny Horton that hasn't already been written. A master in his field of great historical and happy numbers, I could lsiten to him for hours on end. I was happy to be able to buy this wonderful compilation and I know you will be also.
