Product Description

Product Description

The Normans were some of the most feared warriors of the High Medieval period, descended from the Vikings who had settled in Northern France under their leader Rollo in or around 911: throughout the following centuries they built on their warlike reputation. This culminated in their conquest of England under Duke William I. This conquest was by no means assured even after the climactic victory of the battle of Hastings. In order to consolidate his position, William built a series of fortifications around the country. This book covers all these developments from the early days of William I through to the fortifications of Henry II, Richard I and John.

About the Author

Christopher Gravett is Senior Curator at the Royal Armouries and a recognised authority on the arms, armour and warfare of the medieval world. He has worked as an advisor for numerous TV and Film productions. His previous Osprey titles include Elite 17: 'Knights at Tournament', Warrior I: 'Norman Knight 950-1204 AD' and Campaign 13: 'Hastings 1066'. Adam Hook studied graphic design, and began his work as an illustrator in 1983. He specialises in detailed historical reconstructions, and has illustrated Osprey titles on the Aztecs, the Greeks, the American Civil War and the American Revolution. His work features in exhibitions and publications throughout the world.

I had intended this to be a learning text for my Grandson: he might have to wait a few years as it is densely written.

A mixture of good photographs and illustrations a difficult subject is covered well in not many pages. I learned a fair bit, which surprised me.

As usual Osprey Books has done it again. The art work is superb and clear. You get a grasp of the subject quite easily. The sections are short and eeasy to understand. AS part of the fortress series it is a welcome edition.Sit back open the pages and you are there.
