Book Description

Pub landlords are being murdered in Norfolk!

Thelonious T. Bear, ursine photojournalist, leaves behind the big city life of London to take an assignment in the Norfolk countryside, where he hopes to find the real England. Instead he stumbles upon gastro-pubs, crazed Audi drivers and murder. As the hapless Thelonious keeps ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time, he attracts the attention of Detective Chief Inspector Horatio Sidebottom of Norfolk Constabulary CID, who’s determined to tie Thelonious to the crimes. Add in a pair of hoods from London’s East End, celebrity TV chef Paolo Louis Black, and plenty of oddball local characters and it all adds up to a madcap journey through England’s most quirky county, where everything is normal for Norfolk!

From bestselling author Mitzi Szereto, co-authored with her celebrity sidekick bear Teddy Tedaloo.

“For anyone who’s ever wondered what Paddington at Large would have been like if it had been written by Raymond Chandler—and who hasn’t?—Mitzi Szereto has the answer. Like Philip Marlowe, Szereto’s Thelonious T. Bear is a modern knight errant who plays it cool even as the light of suspicion shines on him. And like Paddington, he’s short of stature and long on charm. If you like your sleuths tough, cynical and cute as a button, Normal for Norfolk is the book for you.” —Steve Hockensmith, author of Holmes on the Range and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightfully witty Norfolk Chronicle 1 Mar. 2013
Format:Paperback
I am not sure how the Norfolk Tourist Board (if such a thing exists) will react to this book, but I can tell you that their loss is our gain.
"Normal for Norfolk" is a delightfully funny story about Thelonious T. Bear's adventures in rural (but not so quiet) Norfolk.
The book is packed with the most weird characters, who probably stood at the end of the queue when God was handing out brains.

I won't spoil the plot for you, but it does involve a few murders, some shifty blokes from the East-End and three mysterious Belgians (what have we done to deserve this, Mitzi? *).

What I especially loved was the fact that the book is written from the perspective of a teddy bear. As you know most teddy bears aren't very tall and neither is Thelonious T. Bear, and this can make ordinary life pretty difficult (try ordering pint when you can't reach the bar or filling your tank with gas, when you need a stepladder to reach it).

All in all this is a very enjoyable story and a wonderful, funny, entertaining read. The only thing I really regretted was that...it was over before I knew it.
So I certainly hope we will get another Thelonious T. Bear Chronicle very soon!

(*) the author of this review is of the Belgian persuasion and actually quite proud of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Mystery to Get Your Teeth Into 25 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Well, this is different. A murder mystery in which the main character is a bear. With teeth. Oh yes, the teeth are bared on several occasions and you get the feeling that the inhabitants of Norfolk are rather lucky to still be in full posession of their lower limbs. Apart from Zimmer Frame Granny of course - she'd be the one to put up a fight.

Anyway, it's a right riveting good read. Funny in places, almost heartbreaking at one point (I just wish Thelonius had got that Peanut Brittle House) while still keeping the story going.

There are also East End Gangsters who take the odd chapter with their goings on (I'm desperately trying not to give away the plot here!). Be warned, they are Very Sweary! Nothing wrong with that - and the change in tone between the two plot strands acts as a good dividing line - but be warned, there are Rather Rude Words employed by the two. Not to mention what Floella Benjamin used to call "sexy scenes" when she used to do the Video Classification announcements in the UK!

But in short, I'm glad I bought this. Different, certainly but most entertaining. Here's hoping for more stories of Thelonius T Bear. I'm missing him already!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quirky Mystery 15 Aug. 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well what can I say this is the story of a bear called ....Thelonius T Bear, who sets off to Norfolk to seek a new career as a photographer/journalist....he really enjoys the village life and looking all around the area, however as he enjoys a drink in the local pub he learns that there have been murders of local publicans......will he be blamed as he is the new Bear in town !!!!....I say you should read and enjoy this quirky mystery..... there is a CID officer who has own thoughts and ideas and Thelonius has a very interesting land lady too ........
I enjoyed getting to know the characters in the book and felt i was in Norfolk with them all, I had a good few chuckles as I read too, as much as I really enjoyed this book and would recommend to all, I did feel the story dragged on longer than it needed to be..however I don't usually read this type of book, so you may have different opinions..

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic deviation from the norm 18 Oct. 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I didn't know what to expect when I started reading this book. But was pleasantly surprised, it mixes 'Murder Mystery' on Midsommer scale with the added twist of a teddy bear being the prime suspect! The characters come alive, just by hearing them speak you can picture their entire lifestyles. Whilst a little odd, this book really looks at the aspects of all sorts of current day issues, bigotry for one, the preconceived ideas that people have about country folk versus those that live in the big cities. All this and an excellent read too. It made me smile constantly, and yet I couldn't wait to get to the end to see 'whodunnit'. I will definitely look out for more of Thelonious adventures!! Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended Reading! 28 Aug. 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As someone who owns a very much loved bear, I very much looked forward to reading this and it did not disappoint. A very engaging and humorous look at small town/country life, a lot of fun, very quirky and well worth the read. I hope to see more of Thelonius in the future!

5.0 out of 5 stars a quirky take on the detective novel 20 May 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am always wary of any book set in my home county because the authors have clearly never set foot here and paint the population of Norfolk to be a load of 2 dimensional stereotypes based on several bad programs set here. I found it refreshing that the author had done their research and they portrayed a Norfolk I recognized. The idea of a bear as a central character is a nice twist, and the supporting cast seemed believable too. Do be aware that this bear is not cuddly and there are some "adult" topics in the plot. Overall this was an engaging read and I await the sequel.
