5.0 out of 5 stars Best kept secret Chic album! 3 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If you are one of those that still can't get over the fact you didn't have the money to buy every single Chic production back in the late 70's when Nile Rodgers Bernard Edwards ruled the dancefloors, this one is for you! Norma Jean was the first female Chic singer, apearing on the first two albums in 77 en 78. Her solo album is a full blown Rodgers/Edwards production, and easily compares to all Chic albums from those days like C'est Chic and Risque. Including floorfillers Saturday and Sorcerer it's one of the best kept secrets from the Chic era, when Nile and Nard not only brought us Chic itself, but also their famous productions for Sister Sledge, Sheila B Devotion and Diana Ross.
This CD re-release also includes all extended 12" versions and the a- and b-side of the 79 single that was supposed to be on the never released second Norma Jean album, making it a 5 star issue in my book :)

4.0 out of 5 stars DISCO DAYS 16 Feb 2001
By Pieter Uys HALL OF FAME TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The gorgeous Norma Jean never achieved Chic's commercial success although Saturday, Sorcerer and High Society did well on the disco charts. These songs, especially the 12" mixes, are still the best tracks on this album, plus I Like Love. It's not quite the same as Chic, the arrangements are different. Saturday is my favorite, I love the tinkly bell like sounds that start coming in from the middle of the song. Sorcerer has similar sound effects. I Like Love is very uplifting too, but the rest are filler ballads, pleasant enough but nothing to e-mail home about. All in all a very welcome release with all the new material.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'A Must-Have Album for Fans Of The Chic Sound' 11 July 2012
By Antony May TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
'Norma jean' is the kind of disco album that time has been kind to. In 1978 and up against so many other top quality releases this album failed to make a huge impression but now in 2012 with soul, disco, funk collectors and revivalists keen to search for 'under appreciated gems' the album has finally attracted the attention it deserves.

The album features a number of tracks written by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards and features pretty much all of Chic on it somewhere. The remastered sound is quite simply awesome and dancers like 'Saturday', 'Sorcerer' and 'I Like Love' are sure to take 70's funk lovers back to heaven. 'Saturday' is perhaps the song Norma Jean is best known for but it is easy to see why it didn't quite cut the mustard against classics like 'I Want Your Love', 'He's the Greatest Dancer' and 'Le Freak'. Edwards and Rodgers may both have been great musicians and producers but they were never great lyricists and lines like "Just like some old jerk, all I do is work" are enough to make anyone's teeth grit! Still, Chic were never about the words and the super slick pairing of Rodgers guitar and Edwards bass playing has never been surpassed in the dance music world. Best track for me here is the joyous, typical Chic sounding 'I Like Love' with its incessant guitar work, bubbling bass and awesome drums and percussion its the Chic classic that never was. 'Sorcerer' was a single but surprisingly failed. Oddly however the album version seems to work better than the extended mix (also included) and seems more funky for some reason? Could this have been why the song failed to make an impact, I wonder? The 7" version of 'Saturday' gives off the same impression as well...

As ever with 70's disco albums there are a few ballads here.
