Product Description

Review

"Taste in guide books can be a very personal thing, but few serious boaters will venture out without a Nicholson's Guide. There is a wealth of information that even the most experienced cannot hope to keep abreast of, and the guides are welcome valuable for cyclists and walkers too." The Inland Waterways Association.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed boater 19 May 2012
By Brian
Format:Spiral-bound|Verified Purchase
As an enthusiastic boater on the Inland Waterways for 20 years I always rated the Nicholson guides highest in terms of overall usefulness. The depiction of the waterway was clear and accompanied by a narative description of the route. Each town or village was briefly decribed together with places of interest and other usefull features such as pubs, shops and post office were marked making itinerary planning simple. Distances were given to enable cruising times to be estimated.

I was horrified to find that the Broads Guide conformed to none of these ideals. Although the maps are derived from the popular OS series overprinting has eliminated much of the content. Pubs and shops are not indicated and the only distance finder given appears to be in conflict with itself.

I shall be looking for an alternative guide.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but nothing like the original 1986 version 2 Mar 2012
By romsey
Format:Spiral-bound|Verified Purchase
If you've not seen the original 1986 version, then you'll think its not a bad book. If you have seen the original 1986 version you will be disappointed by the scale of the maps (based on 1:50,000 maps rather than the larger scale OS maps).

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 16 Jun 2012
By ennyl
Format:Spiral-bound|Verified Purchase
If your going to the broads I would try and find a book that has more detailed information about what facilities are at each stopping point as this book was less than accurate (having just returned from the broads)and not a huge help.

2.0 out of 5 stars Norfolk Broads 18 April 2012
By Boatfan
Format:Spiral-bound|Verified Purchase
Having seen Jarrolds - What to do on the Norfolk Broads (Which ceased publication a number of years ago) I was very disappointed with this book.
Jarrolds always included tide tables and other useful facts concerning enjoying the Broads, this contained no tide tables and other facts Jarrolds included.
Collins/Nicholsons version is very nicely produced but I feel that users of the Broads will use it but like myself regret the ommissions that Jarrolds put in.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly general 30 Sep 2013
Format:Spiral-bound|Verified Purchase
I was very disappointed with this publication. It is too 'dumbed down' and provided little that I needed in either inspiration or practical guidance! Compared to earlier Nicholson guides I felt that I had wasted my money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great companion to the Heron Maps Waterways Series Map.
If you only buy one map to go to the broads then get the Heron Maps map of the broads. Ideally though you're best off getting both.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good little guide
Not as big as I'd expected, and the meaning of the icons on the map should all be on one page instead of three different ones

3.0 out of 5 stars Its a map.
The book showed the broads in a map format and had small reviews on the areas to be visited. Could have paid more attention to moorings and what shoops are in each area.
