Book Description

16 April 2012
This book celebrates established icons, newly discovered gems and contemporary masterworks that represent the highest expression of Scandinavian design and response to their environment. Fifty projects are featured in detail, ordered according to the way in which different light conditions have imparted particular qualities on the buildings. Henry Plummer treats his subject from a uniquely authoritative perspective in which his words resonate directly with his artfully taken images. Books that give a true sense of the magical light that have shaped great buildings are rare: this is a publication to savour. Nine chapters present established icons, newly discovered gems and contemporary masterworks, according to the way in which different light conditions have imparted particular qualities to buildings. Among the buildings featured are Arne Jacobsens town hall in Århus, Denmark, Alvar Aaltos Villa Mairea in Finland, Klas Anshelms Malmö Konsthall in Sweden, and many others. Each chapter features an introduction, which traces the nature, quality and cultural history of that aspect of light.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modern Scandinavian Architecture 7 Jan 2013
Scandinavia's climate and environment have helped to shape some of the most striking and thoughtful modern architecture. This book presents dozens of the finest Scandinavian buildings of the past 80 years, with designs by leading 20th century architects, Alvar Aalto, Arne Jacobsen, Jørn Utzon and others. Just under fifty projects are featured here in detail, with plenty of atmospheric photos of the buildings by the author, Henry Plummer. The book focuses on the use of light within these buildings, where the architects have lit their spaces using all kinds of design tricks, to maximize the low Northern light and create playful and beautifully lit spaces.
The majority of the projects are university buildings, chuches, hospitals and libraries, which underlines the Scandinavians' commitment to high quality public buildings.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many pictures of churches! 20 Jun 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I bought this book because I was looking for inspiration for designing a new build house in Yorkshire. I'm a big fan of Scandinavian architecture. This book has some lovely iamges that really bring out the special nature of light in the Nordic countries. However, as someone who is interested primarily in private houses it has far too many pictures of churches for my liking! These demonstrate the effects that the author is seeking to highlight, but are not very relevant for someone like me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but a limited spectrum 26 May 2012
By Dennis M. Clark - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
There is nothing in the description of this book on the Amazon site to indicate that more than 60% of the book is devoted to ecclesiastical architecture -- lots of churches and chapels. That's all very well, since the selections are quite stunning, but there are far too many pictures of church pews and crosses in the book for my taste. The secular buildings are primarily museums and government buildings. If one is hoping for views of major performing arts structures (there have been several notable new opera houses built in Scandinavia recently), one will have to look elsewhere. Don't expect much in the way of transportation hubs either, even though train stations are such an important aspect of modern Scandinavian architecture.

Despite my reservations, this is a strangely compelling book, possibly best described as illustrated poetry. The photographs draw the reader into a mythical space and the text provides clues, hints, feelings, patterns -- architecture as numinous art, as an invitation to a spiritual journey. Again, not at all what I expected, but quite a beautiful book.
