Product Description

Review

There may have been a change of personnel, but Warsaw Village Band are still one of the most adventurous, exciting groups in Europe. Matching the thrilling, harsh-edged vocals of their two female singers Magdalena Sobczak-Kotnarowska and Sylwia Swiatkowska against slinky bass riffs, percussion and wild violin work (with a dash of dulcimer, trumpet or traditional P ock fiddle added in), they create an edgy reworking of folk styles that can switch between furious dance pieces and passages of quirky, quietly thrilling a cappella vocals. They have been travelling in Scandanavia and North America, and the best songs are collaborations. The opening track, which apparently translates as Hey You, Yokel's Son, is a wailing, stomping workout in which they are joined by the bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy of the Swedish band Hedningarna, while on War's Coming they are helped by singer Sandy Scofield, for what sounds like a wild exercise in folk-trance music, with dub effects added in. Play it loud. FOUR STARS --The Guardian

5.0 out of 5 stars resonates in my soul 8 Jun 2012

This is a wonderful album, full of haunting music, the musicianship is brilliant but seemingly effortless and there is a fresh mix of sounds, some Scandinavian jazz mixes with the unique voices and musically hypnotic sounds I recognise as the Warsaw Village Band. Don't hesitate, just buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Polish hardcore folk band mixes old with new 29 Mar 2013
By Tom - Published on Amazon.com
I first encountered the Warsaw Village Band in 2003 when I stumbled on their second album, "People's Spring," at the local Barnes and Noble and I've been a fan ever since. The group presents traditional material in a modern context using archaic folk instruments. Vocals are often sung in a style used by Polish shepherds called bialy glos (white voice); a combination of singing and shouting. The band made a stop in Buffalo on their 2004 tour of North America but their progressive material was not well-received by the Chopin Singing Society blue hairs who expected an evening of tame folk music.

Nord, the band's latest delightful offering, combines Scandinavian and Slavic elements. Unfortunately, it seems that Amazon US is no longer offering WVB's albums in CD format but I was able to order a copy of Nord from Amazon UK.

Albums from Warsaw Village Band:

Hopsasa (released in US and UK as Kapela ze wsi Warszawa in 2005) - 1998
Wiosna Ludu (People's Spring) - 2002 - in my opinion their finest album.
Wykorzenienie (Uprooting) - 2004
Wymiksowanie (Upmixing) - 2008
Infinity - 2008
Nord - 2012
