Review

Now what can I say. It was mind boggling and absolutely faultless. You have used the lovely weird, wonderful and most imaginative characters to so clearly illustrate the fragmentation of society from the start of time. You have intertwined the sun, moon, wind and all the elements so beautifully into the tale. Not once did I feel confused or that I could not follow who was who as each character is so distinct and special that they stay embedded in your memory forever.

The creatures you describe, birds and animals have been made to appear so real in their descriptions that you can visualise them in front of you like they really do exist.

Each ending is so real it brings a shiver down your spine and the reader readily accepts them as that is what happens. It does not make the reader feel sad or disinterested. It made me feel like reading on and on to find out what happens next.

The way you have linked all the stories is very clever and must have taken you months but you have done a great job.

I could not put it down. I think that the book has been written so well and has a lot to offer. I really cannot wait for my son to read it. It was fantastic.
--Anjali Mittal, children's book author

Product Description

Maara, the girl with three blessings, stares in disbelief out of the window of her uncle’s cottage down by the harbour. The terrible army from the Land Beyond is marching out of their lives after one hundred years of cruel occupation.
Thus begins the story of Ambamar and its inhabitants: iron-mining Anvil People, gigantic, agricultural Timekeepers, mysterious, scholarly Scribes and Mariners - the fisher folk. Their histories were written long ago in secret papers, and in a magical speaking book that Elin and Arolan, the two trumpeters who herald the promise of a new dawn, carry down from the Iron Mountain, where it had lain hidden for a century. It is imperative for the people to learn these fantastical tales that bind them, for along with freedom, are hatching the serpents of hatred and distrust.
Elin and Arolan’s attempts to bring peace, bring them instead to the brink of disaster. It is left to Maara and her band of like-minded citizens to try and save them and to stop the ruin of Ambamar. Their task is fraught with danger, as they encounter destructive nature spirits, heroes and villains, raging seas, desert sands, dark forests and magical creatures.
Noontide Owls is a tale for all ages from 9 to 109.

The story begins when the Conquerors, the brutal occupiers of Shoogmunimera, formerly and latterly known as Ambamar, leave the country, having plundered its riches and reduced it to a barren land. Originally united in adversity, the various tribes whose home it is soon begin to split apart, each trying to get the best of what remains. Within these tribes, brave individuals struggle to reunite the warring factions. This story runs concurrently with tales which describe how each of the tribes had originally found their way to Ambamar.

Irene Black is skilled in the art of description, and in her two earlier novels, she uses this to great effect to capture the character of the Indian subcontinent, which is featured in both previous books. I am not normally a reader of fantasy books, but I read Noontide Owls, having read these other two books, and I was not disappointed.

In fact, this genre has allowed Irene Black to give full rein to her imagination, without the restriction of a factual background. As such, a fantasy world has been created with ordinary and extraordinary mythical creatures inhabiting it. The book is enhanced by a number of black and white drawings illustrating some of the chapters.

With appealing main characters, Maara and the brave Trumpeters, Arolan and Elin, Noontide Owls is an intelligent and beautifully written allegory for adults and a fantastic adventure for young readers. I strongly recommend it.

A friend recommended this book to me and I didn't think it would be my cup of tea at all, but I loved it from the first page. A really great story and lots of moral stuff going on too. A great read, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Irene Black has conjured up a magical world of universal appeal - at the risk of cliche, I couldn't put the book down. Beautifully written, it captures the imagination and I am sure will resonate with all ages.
