This textbook is aimed at newcomers to nonlinear dynamics and chaos, especially students taking a first course in the subject. The presentation stresses analytical methods, concrete examples and geometric intuition. The theory is developed systematically, starting with first-order differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, and culminating with the Lorenz equations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, renormalization, fractals, and strange attractors. A unique feature of the book is its emphasis on applications. These include mechanical vibrations, lasers, biological rhythms, superconducting circuits, insect outbreaks, chemical oscillators, genetic control systems, chaotic waterwheels, and even a technique for using chaos to send secret messages. In each case, the scientific background is explained at an elementary level and closely integrated with the mathematical theory. Richly illustrated, and with many exercises and worked examples, this book is ideal for an introductory course at the junior/senior or first-year graduate level. It is also ideal for the scientist who has not had formal instruction in nonlinear dynamics, but who now desires to begin informal study. The prerequisites are multivariable calculus and introductory physics.

Steven H. Strogatz is professor of applied mathematics at Cornell University. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1986. Professor Strogatz has been honored with several awards including MIT's highest teaching prize, the E.M. Baker Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, as well as a Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation. Strogatz's approach to Nonlinear Dynamics is suitable for anyone equipped with a good basic understanding of ordinary differential equations. He allows the reader to gradually build-up their understanding through a series of illustrations and examples - this is the sort of book that will be indispensable the night before a final year undergraduate Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics exam. Not excessively mathematical, contains solid explanations and leaves you wanting to learn more about this fantastic area of physics.

This book is an excellent introductory graduate level text on nonlinear dynamics for those who wish to understand the basic concepts before seeing the mathematical rigor at the heart of the subject. Strogatz avoids getting caught up in mathematical nuances which often cloud the big picture for non-math students, and thereby clearly impresses upon the reader the essence of nonlinear dynamics, eventually building up to chaos. The examples and problems are truly unique and inspiring. This book is an excellent starting place for someone who knows little or nothing about nonlinear dynamics but has done some basic work with linear differential equations and linear algebra.

Strogatz gradually introduces you into the analysis of Dynamics, their interpretation and Evaluation all that with just moderate Calculus, Basic Ordinary Differential Equations and very Little Algebra. It is also suited for easy self study. It is very Pedagogic Stressing in the Interpretation and Understanding of Topics due to its detailed and compresive explanatons chapter by chapter. Allthou it is enriched with many applied examples in Physics, Biology, Chemistry,... Making it extreme easy to follow all the topics as well as deepenig more in them. It is a jewell among the introductory Chaos Theory and Nonlinear Dynamics books towards the multidisciplinarity of Science in the coming Century.

I recently took an undergrad course which used this book as the text. This book is very easy to follow, contains great explanations and diagrams, and is just plain interesting to read. Anyone who has had a basic calc/ODE class background could understand this book.

This is an excelent text with challenging problems (which you should work at for a while and not give up!)and clear explanations. The book explains a mostly geometric approach, and leaves the ananlytical side to you. Buy this book even if you've never heard of "Nonlinear Dynamics". You'll be glad you did!

A very good book. Recommended for all readers familiar or even vaguely familiar with Ordinary Differential Equations and Calculus. Its informal style helps a lot. The examples are clear and enough background information is given to understand them.

It is an absolutely marvelous text. I was looking for a text which introduced nonlinear dynamics and all its interesting applications to professors and scientists whose common background included only 1 year of calculus. All I could find was higher level math books, which for the most part were very boring as they got lost in an orgy of math. This text introduces concepts using an intuitive, graphical approach. The mathematics is rigorous, but boring details are avoided. There are fantastic examples in all areas of science. I have often noted that there are many science texts but far too few good ones. This is a great one.
