Review

One of the most glorious achievements of publishing in our time --Daily Telegraph

It will never be more possible for a more complete and perfect edition to be put on the market --Arthur Waugh, Past President, Dickens Fellowship

Product Description

The second set of 3 titles in the essential collector's Dickens, based on the world-famous Nonesuch Press edition of 1937. The text is taken from the 1867 Chapman and Hall edition, which became known as the Charles Dickens edition, and was the last edition to be corrected by the author himself. The Nonesuch edition contains illustrations selected by Dickens himself, by artists including Hablot Knight Browne ('Phiz'), George Cruikshank, John Leech, Robert Seymour and George Cattermole. The new Nonesuch Dickens reproduces the original elegance of these beautiful editions. Books are printed on Natural Cream shade high quality stock, are quarter bound in bonded leather with cloth sides, include a ribbon marker and feature special printed endpapers. This set includes: 'A Tale of Two Cities', ISBN 9780715635216, 'Little Dorrit', ISBN 9780715638118, and 'Martin Chuzzlewit', ISBN 9780715638125

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor Production, 22 Mar 2009
This review has nothing to do with the quality of Dickens's three novels collected here: if you're not a fan, nothing I write here is likely to persuade you otherwise.

If you are a fan and looking for an edition to hang on to, however, I would advise you to look elsewhere. Unlike other reviewers, I am extremely disappointed with the production quality of these volumes -- and of the disingenuous marketing. The quote from the Daily Telegraph refers to the original Nonesuch Dickens, not these copies, which are poorly offset from the originals; overinked on porous paper; and cheaply bound. They look like the sorts of books that are bought by people for the bookshelf, not for reading.

In short, the books look and feel cheap and nasty -- which is quite an achievement at £25 a pop. The Folio Society produces handsome volumes based on the Nonesuch Dickens, and though more expensive than these one they are worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this set, 4 Dec 2008

This continues the publication of Dicken's works in this edition. The books are well made and a joy to hold and read. I have long wanted a good set of the works of Dickens and this is the best I have found at a price which is not so cheap that the books are tacky, but at a price that permits quality: they are excellent value for money. My one complaint is that the publication dates are too few and far between and a year from one release to the next is too long. Having said that I am prepared to wait because the books are so good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Dickens ever, 4 Feb 2009
By Mr. Andrew Robb "Andy Robb" (Cumbria, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is how Dickens wanted his books printed. The three book set adds to the original six books already published. The quality of the bindings, paper and drawings add to the already exquisite text.

Only one question - When can we expect to see the rest of his works given the same treatment.
