Non-verbal reasoning requires recognition of similarities, analogies and patterns in unfamiliar designs. They involve the ability to reason with novel material, without the need to draw on learned knowledge and are used to assess a person's ability to spot patterns and identify errors or inconsistencies. As such this book is split into two sections a) spotting patterns and b)assessment tests. If being used by parents in preparation for an 11+ test or another selective entrance exam it is worth remembering that the books build up in stages of a child's ability and can be started 3 books earlier with ages 7-8. As a teacher, I'd love to acquire the full set as I thought they were excellent. I work in a secondary school for students with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties and although I'm an English teacher these are a way for me to combine difficult skills into starter activities or standalone tasks with my tutor group to support skills development.

The spotting patterns section focuses on shapes, counting, pointing, shading and line types, order and position, rotation, reflection and layering. They are put together to help a child understand the main concepts needed for the Non-Verbal Reasoning test and build up the different skills they'll need for the real test. The assessment tests form the second half of the book and there are five in total with a mix of questions similar to the real test. Each test can be set with a time of 30 minutes if you want your child to get used to timed activities. The tests get harder as they progress. Finally, at the back there is a pull out section (if you're wanting to keep it tidy) with all the answers you'll need.

I'm really rather keen on The CGP range of 11+ practice books.

This non-verbal reasoning practice book is effectively divided into 2 parts: a workbook section focusing in a certain amount of detail on particular non-verbal reasoning skills, and a series of 5 Assessment tests of increasing difficulty, each designed to be completed in 30 minutes. The skills examined are spotting patterns in: Shapes, Counting, Pointing, Shading and Line Types, Order and Position, Rotation, Reflection and Layering.

The vast majority of the book is given over to the full Assessment Tests (accounting for 60 of the book's 78 pages).

There is little in the way of explanation given in the workbook section - and it is very evident that this is not meant as an introductory resource, but rather to reinforce previous knowledge and understanding of what non-verbal reasoning is about. For an introductory look at the topic, a 'Study Book and Parents Guide' is available from the same series.

A detachable answer booklet, with fully explained solutions to each of the problems is included.

These are a good range of rather notable guides which are designed to get a child to level where they have the tools to pass the 11 plus test. Both my nephews and nieces are approaching these tests soon. The books in the series give both parent and tutor a way in which to enable them to give a child the kind of practice questions and reasoning ability to tackle the exam with reasonable confidence, the answers are at the back of each topic book, and they can be separated out. Where appropriate there is a guide for tutor/parent to give them over view and guidance. The layout is good and very clear, each category is well indexed and each topic in good detail. The clip art used is, in these texts, is not going win awards but does its job and frankly that is all that is needed.

These books do not just have to be about the 11 plus; they can be used in a supportive way to reinforce school work, to engage the child further. Like some other reviewers I picked the Mathematics book, the book for English along with the verbal reasoning and non-reasoning. The standard across all the editions is very good and there is a uniformity of layout. This range, for me, good value for money I have no hesitation in recommending this range.

For parents wanting to hone their kids' non-verbal reasoning skills, this is surely a valuable resource. We are not in a grammar school area, (and I believe that not all tests include non-verbal reasoning anyway), however I do think that skills such as the ones practiced in this book are very useful and are great for improving analytical thinking...it certainly can't hurt to introduce your child to these types of question.

The book itself is fairly no-nonsense and is straight down to business with lots of questions. There are lots of much more friendly looking workbooks out there, (not necessarily for non-verbal reasoning), but I haven't deducted a mark for this because by age 10-11 - the age at which this book is aimed at - I think that many kids can cope without all the stickers, funny comments etc running through the book. Initially the questions are divided up by topic: shapes; counting; pointing; shading and line types; order and position; rotation; reflection and layering and then at the end of the book there are 5 assessment tests, (which gradually increase in difficulty), in the style of the 11+. I love the fact that you can print out answer sheets for the assessment tests, meaning that you can use them again. This is a great bonus for me as I have 2 sons and I often end up photocopying pages of workbooks for the eldest to work on so that his younger brother can use the same book in years to come...so this spares me the work, (at least for the assessment tests). Sadly the same isn't provided for the initial questions.

There is good guidance given for the parent as to how to use the book and, hopefully, to help your child to improve their scores.
