My Favourite Soft Cell Album Given the Deluxe Treatment! 31 Mar. 2010
By Frederick Baptist - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
It's difficult to adequately describe the massive impact Soft Cell has had on me ever since I first heard this album on bootleg cassette all those years ago.

They just blew me away! Like most people, I got the album because of "Tainted Love" and then I found out 1) they didn't write it and 2) it was one of the weakest tracks on the album!

Every track was totally unique and totally unlike anything that I'd heard before. And then the "Bohemian Rhapsody" or the "Day in the Life" moment of the album, "Say Hello and Wave Goodbye" comes on and almost brings a tear to my eye; what a great way to end an album. One of my all-time favourite albums by a mile!

This mini-lp replica sleeve (mlps) version of the Deluxe release though is a bit of a mixed bag. As far as mlps designs go this is very average as it is poorly assembled out of thin cardboard that looks like it will come apart soon when the glue gets old which is sad given the amount of mullah they expect you to part with for this. Ironically the inner sleeve is actually better designed and assembled than the main sleeve! The sound has been remastered though and hence is an improvement over the original release. Also included are a hard cardboard square replica of the original vinyl centre circle and a fold-out with all the lyrics on the original release in Japanese and in English. There is also a very neat glossy, colour 24-page booklet with photos, pictures and an essay on the band by David Hemingway.

There is no disputing the quality of the content though as in addition to the original track listings we get the entire original track listing of the follow up album "Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing" as well as that great single "Torch" here in good sound quality as well. The other bonus track on the first disc is another version of "A Man Could Get Lost" which is forgettable but nice to have as a collectors' piece. I would have been perfectly content with the first disc alone but they also added a second disc which I didn't enjoy as much but I suppose for a deluxe edition they felt obliged to add as much material as they could and I'm sure this will satisfy the most die-hard of fans.

The tracks on disc two are:

1. Memorabilia (Extended)
2. Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go (12" Mix)
3. Bedsitter (Extended)
4. Say Hello, Wave Goodbye (Extended)
5. Torch (Extended)
6. What? (Extended)
7. Persuasion
8. Facility Girls
9. Fun City
10.Insecure Me (Extended)
11.So

Overall, this is an interesting mlps release as although the mlps design itself isn't great the content is; this is especially so for Disc 1 which has remastered versions of the complete "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret" and "Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing" albums plus the single "Torch". I didn't enjoy Disc 2 as much but I'm sure die hard fans will not complain and I suppose it wouldn't be a "deluxe" edition without at least a second disc?

Recommended.
