This book answers all the questions we had about becoming non-resident for tax purposes and more. The plain-English style in which it is written was a welcome break from the other - frankly rather confusing - books we had read on the subject in the past. There's also lots of information for people who are not UK domiciled and chapters on using offshore trusts and companies. Anyone who is even considering non-residency status should have this on their bookshelf.

But we are dealing with a very complex topic so good luck as you try and grapple with being resident but not ordinarily resident etc!

I was interested to read that the Times Editorial referred to this book as an authorative reference on the subject of non residence and domicility concerning the recent controversy around Lord Ashcroft.

Bottom line

1 Its a complex subject

2 There is a lot of good advice and info in this book.

3 The Inland Revenue have become so much more proactive in challenging residency etc in the past 10 years

4 That unless you are permanently moving our of the UK forever and never want to come back

5 You might as well just pay the taxes

My overiding thought after reading it was 'Is it worth the hassle of turning your life upside down to save the tax'?

Probably not.

If on the other hand you legitimately work overseas or wish to emigrate this book is a useful reference tool and can be referred to in discussions with your advisors.

If you know nothing about becoming a non resident then this is the book for you. It begins by providing a quick introduction of the tax issues facing non residents and then delves deeper into the various loopholes that exist, doing so in a style thats friendly and easy to understand.

I can't recommend it enough.
