3.0 out of 5 stars Not for use in an emergency, 27 Dec 2006
By M. Williams (Traveller) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This is my 4th or 5th Nokia phone, and I had high expectations for it, although it was something of an impulse purchase at a duty-free store.

It's certainly very useful for the advanced features such as being able to read/send email (especially with the downloadable GMAIL application) and to check web pages, but basic services are definitely wanting.

    Some gotchas:
    1. Battery life is poor, even with wifi services off. I find it will suddenly go from appearing to be almost fully charged to flat overnight without any use.
    2. It takes about a minute to boot it!! So no good in an emergency if the phone is off.
    3. The operating software hangs quite frequently, requiring powerdown - often by removing battery - and then waiting ages for it to reboot. The latest firmware (2007) is even worse.
    4. Changing between functions is VERY slow, on the order of 10 seconds. There are also problems with screen refresh so a text message may take over 5 seconds to display.
    5. You lock the keyboard by closing the slider. However... the slider only has to open a couple of mm for it to unlock, which happens very easily in the pocket.
    6. Basic functions such as finding recent calls are harder to locate than on more "traditional" Nokia phones.
    7. Setting up access to a home LAN is much harder than you'd expect, and you really need to look for online documentation other than that provided by Nokia.
    8. Finally, if you have largish fingers, then using the principle non-numeric button is a real trial. The buttons are probably slightly larger than my previous phone, but the main rocker button is very frustrating to use.
    [Postscripts]
    9. The included web browser cannot cope with many eBay pages, so you cannot (for example) click through from your My Ebay page to a particular auction. It also won't maintain cookies properly so retyping user-names and passwords becomes an ongoing chore.
    10. You cannot correct errors in predictive text in form fields (used in emails and other contexts) because the "Spell" option does not appear when you toggle through available strings.

If I could, I would probably reduce the star rating to 2 based on further experience. A few dealers I have spoken to now refuse to stock this model because of ongoing problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tiny and Smart, 26 Oct 2006
By Mr. R. Nana - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
This is a little bit of an answer to the above review... The part about the battery life is mostly true, but the huge drain can be mitigated by lowering the screen's brightness and cutting down on wireless activity, the screen is still bright enough at the second lowest setting. Secondly, I managed to upgrade the included QuickOffice for about £10, to full editing capabilty, and I use it to make spreadsheets on the go, although entering text is a little painful on this handset.
I'm not a huge fan of the keys, the Sonyericssons I have used have all had better ergonomics. My last phone, the SE S700i had side mounted volume buttons which the N80 lacks, and this feature allowed me to use the S700i to listen to the radio or mp3s and change volume/tracks without taking it out of my pocket, something that can't be done on the N80. So, even though I have a 2GB MiniSD in it, it's never used for music.
The Camera is a little disappointing for a 3MP rated camera too, especially in low light, but the video mode is very high quality and is much better than any SonyEricsson.
The slide is a maybe a little too prone to opening itself in your pocket, but I have partly fixed it with an auto keylock program.
The main advantage of this phone over other Nokia Series60 phones is its size, it's as small as a typical Samsung slider, if a little bit thicker.
However, the ability of this phone to conquer its flaws through the power of software cannot be underestimated.... maybe Nokia might even make a simpler music app to round this handset off?
Even though this handset has 3G, the main reason I bought it was the inclusion of WiFi. The combination of this with Nokia's new Web browser is currently the best mobile browsing experience on any mobile platform, it beats even Opera and Netfront.
The screen is an absurdly high resolution for its size, 352x416, 2.1" but the processor is fast enough not to let the huge graphical overhead affect the speed. There are a few usability issues I have with Nokia's contacts app, but this is nothing compared to the bugs I would have had to contend with had I bought the SE P990i.
Mine was a pretty early release and therefore slightly buggy, but I can live with them. The phone hangs in the gallery application occasionally, and when it does, this stops the multimedia key from working, which is a bit bizzare.
The package includes an adaptor for use with normal earbuds, which is nice.
All in all, this multitalented phone is not perfect, but it does achieve a lot in a neat package. The only features it lacks are HSDPA, QWERTY thumbboard and touchscreen, and DVB-H.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good piece of kit, 18 Aug 2006
By Barry Leslie (Peterborough) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
Let me start by stating that this would get 5 stars, but for the fact the battery life is ropey. That said, I would highly recommend this phone. I got this on an upgrade, despite wanting a sat nav phone. I was unsure whether I would like it, but this is the first smartphone that I've had that doesn't slow down the computer and synchronises perfectly with a pc to give you a great little handset.

This is further enhanced by the QuickOffice application that allows users to view Word, Excell and Powerpoint documents on the phone, although users can't create or edit them. Users can use the notepad to make notes on and I have ben able to store in note form, a 3 mb document.

As well as this, the phone has all the regular goodies, like media player, fm radio, games and a 3 megapixel camera as well as a forward -facing camera (for video calling). The phone also has an interesting voice dialling system that doesn't require the user to record all their contacts.

What impressed me most about this was the fact that here you have a compact phone that is packed with features, the bluetooth connections are nice and smooth and the display is crisp and sharp. This phone is one that I find simple and straightforward yet highly developed.

    Highly recommended
