This review is from: Nokia 3109 Sim Free Mobile Phone (Electronics)
Having used all the main makes of phone at some time or other, I have come to the conclusion that the Nokia menu system and texting interface is by far the best. Consequently, when I started to look for a new phone I restricted myself to Nokia. My next requirement was a model with as few bells and whistles as possible. I didn't want a camera, or an mp3 player, or a radio - I want the phone for communications purposes, not for entertainment or as a fashion statement. Eventually I discovered the 3109, quite by accident as it turned out. It is in the 'Classic' range, and feels quite large in the hand. But the extra size means a good-sized colour screen and an unusually large keypad. The large keys combined with the Nokia texting interface mean that texting is about as easy as it is possible for it to be. The screen itself is clear and bright, and the detail on it is easily visible even in broad daylight. Build quality is very good, and connection to other devices can be achieved by Bluetooth, Infrared or USB cable. Total memory available in the phone is about 9MB, though roughly half of that is already in use when you receive it. You can, however, expand the memory by up to 2GB via a Micro SD card. Sound quality is very good, and the ringtones are louder than on most phones I have used. There is no radio or camera, but there is an mp3 player. However, I'm not knocking off a star just because there is an additional facility I never use. All in all I cannot fault this phone in any department. If you want/need the camera and radio, I understand that the 3110 model is exactly the same phone but with those features added.

After a number of unsatisfactory payg phones most of which had features I neither needed or wanted at last I've found a phone which does everything simply. Its menus are logical and easy to negotiate, the buttons are big enough to see without glasses, it is large enough to be robust but still reasonably light, connects easily to my car with bluetooth. It has a music player facility which I won't use (I have an ipod)no camera (I already have a digital one) but only needs charging once a week although permanently turned on. Can highly recommend.

Nokia 3109 - A great "no frills" phone., 29 July 2009

If you are looking for a basic handset (no camera) with a decent screen, a keypad suitable for larger fingers and reasonable battery life, then the 3109 is definitely worth considering. I have owned this model for about a month now and it has proved to be a great performer. I have seen a few reviews that have noted problems with short periods between recharging, but I have not experienced this, although I do not use the phone heavily, maybe a couple of short calls and texts per day. Reception performance has generally been good (with Vodafone) - the only time I have had a problem, other people were also experiencing difficulties.
I must admit to being a fan of the nokia menu system, I have tried other phone manufacturers and find navigating through some of the layouts less than intuitive.
The only reason that it gets 4 stars and not 5, is the volume on the ring tones is not quite loud enough for me (obviously a very personal thing) and as always the handbook that comes with the phone is rubbish. Check with your provider for hints and tips - I know Vodafone provide some useful info. on phones.
If you really do need a camera on your phone - then check out the 3110 model, I think this is otherwise identical to the 3109.
Update May 2010 - having had this phone for a while now, I understand why some people have complained about short battery charge life for talk and standby time. I have noticed that if you leave the bluetooth connectivity set to ON at all times, this will require that charging is needed about every 3 days. Therefore I have got into the habit of turning the Bluetooth connection OFF when I don't need it, generally giving me an extra two days between charges.
