For everyday use? 7 May 2011
By Flaco
Like any of the other Nokia phones in this price range, they satisfy the fundamental requirements brilliantly - (a) the transceivers in these units are superb, so signal strength is always fantastic for me (anywhere I've been, using O2), (b) lacking any bells and whistles in terms of functionality means the battery life is ridiculously long. These two features are all I want from a phone, so the units are 100% fit for my purposes. I have this SIM-free 1800 as a back-up spare phone, and at £25 this an affordable insurance policy.

However, even if you only want this phone for it's simplicity, I'm not sure it is a good choice for every day use for one simple reason: the keypad is smooth shiny plastic. The keys on these phones are always small, so trying to use the pad of your thumb produces selection errors. So, like most people, you will end up using the edge of your fingernail to make selections. On smooth plastic this means that your nail will skid too easily and you'll still end up making incorrect selections. This is especially evident when trying to delete a character during texting because the softkey and 'end' key are on a single 'rocker' - rather than deleting the character, you end up bumping yourself out of the msg entirely. Really annoying.

If I were to have this as an everyday phone, I wouldn't be able to live with this slippery keypad. There are other Nokia phones in this price range with great reception and battery life that may be worth investigating to avoid this problem.

UPDATE 20 Mar 2012: my wife has been using this as a back up while her 6300 was being fixed. She reports exactly the same problem with the slippery-surfaced rocker pads; tried to alter text in a message and kept bumping herself out of the message completely. Really spoils what would otherwise be a perfectly serviceable phone.

Delivery excellent. Bought a Nokia as other phones in household were Nokia so was disappointed to find that charger was different but I have managed to source an adaptor to deal with that issue. Good basic phone.

ok phone from Nokia 8 Aug 2011
By Alec TOP 500 REVIEWER
Length: 1:42 Mins
The video is showing what you get in the box, the phone, battery, charger and handsfree which doubles up as the aerial for the FM radio.
The phone is easy to use, taking off the back case to put in my sim card and the battery was ok. The back clips on, doesn't slide or pop off like other phones I've had so doesn't feel the best when you pull it off but once the sim and battery are in it never needs to be touched again.
The menu system is classic Nokia, so if you're familiar with Nokia you should have no problems using the phone. The ringtones have been jazzed up a bit and the volume goes nice and loud so you can hear it. The colour screen is clear and I found the text large enough to read without squinting.
The reception is good and the battery life is good as well, about 5-6 days between charges and that's with a few calls a day and texts. Good little torch on the top, nothing amazing but ok.
The only downside and was mentioned in another review, the buttons are shiny plastic and you can sometimes hit the wrong button when texting, not a big problem if you only send the odd text, would be annoying if you sent lots. When making calls I use the phonebook on the mobile so its not a problem.
If it wasn't for the buttons it would of been rated as 5 instead of 4.

Extra added 2 weeks after initial review- The top left button on the keypad is very sensitive, when writing a text, if you make a mistake and need to delete one character it can often delete the whole message as if the button has been pressed twice! Don't send many texts but is annoying. If you want to send texts choose another phone, but if you just want to make and receive calls it works fine. Have downgraded the review stars to 3 because of this.
