Too many cooks, 30 Nov 2006
This review is from: Nocturne in Bleu (Paperback)
This is a very clumsy effort. There is no real narrative voice and characters come across as one dimensional ciphers forwarding a dreary unimaginative plot.
This novel offers us a depressingly unperceptive view of the world. A world were promiscious sex and drugs appear to be seen as the be all and end all.
In short, with it's pre-school philosophy, bad language and explicit sex scenes, there is not much else going on of any real interest.

A patchwork of ideas awkwardly stitched together., 20 Dec 2006
This review is from: Nocturne in Bleu (Paperback)
This novel is not very good. I withdrew it from the library to have a look after happening on to the author's blog page. I only got three quarters of the way through. It makes for extremely poor reading. This is very clearly a POD (Published on Demand) book.
It's written with no real grasp of story telling ability and there is no distinctive narrative voice present. It just seems to be a patchwork of different ideas. There is also an awful lot of research padding the thing out. I tried hard to find positive things to say but unfortunately it's just not good enough.

Simply Awful!, 21 Dec 2006
This review is from: Nocturne in Bleu (Paperback)
A rather irritaded friend gave me his copy to read for my opinion on the quality of this work. Well! I have read it and now here is my opinion.
It's nicely bound with an interesting picture on the front. There is also a positive review at the top of the cover that advises that this is an 'Outstanding debut'- Um,well... It's actually an appalling book that is so obviously Self-published.
Do I think the author put his heart and soul into this book? Yes, I do. In fact, you can tell that he did an extensive amount of research that, in the right hands, could have been turned into a fascinating story. He even hit on what could have been an effective, engaging way to tell the story. Except... He was obviously not equipped to do so. And, at the risk of sounding snotty, I don't think he ever will be. Nor do I think he has any idea how truly horrid this book is--how frustrating, even infuriating, it is to read.
