As I write this I am not sure if my computer it on, although the noise of my typing annoys me evermore...

I recently got a Fractal Design R4 case in the search for a quieter desktop. My Desktop previously sounded like a jet idling before take off. My set up? Gigabyte 990FXA-UD7, AMD Phenom II X6, GTX 660Ti, x2 4GB Vengeance Corsair RAM with massive heatsinks, <insert old, noisy CPU fan here>. Although the new case helped dampen the sound, the idling jet now simply sounded like a revving ferrari. I narrowed it down to the CPU fan and after much research chose this.

Firstly I should point out that this is a BIG fan. Check on the manufacturer's page because they give a list of compatibility, mine was fine, and my case had plenty of room. Through amazon arrived perfectly and on time, of course. The packaging was great, and the instructions very clear. Installation was a breeze with the case having an open back panel cut out to allow access - much easier to install that my older and smaller fan. It came with a screwdriver (nice and thoughtful touch), thermal paste, a logo (LOL), AMD and Intel mounting kits, spare stuff for adding a back fan, and a resistance cable to limit the speed to 1200rpm for quieter operation - this suite me fine as I don't overclock.

The Good:
- Easy peasy installation
- My CPU is running 20 deg C cooler at idling now !!!

You clearly get what you pay for.

The whole fan assembly was easy to fit onto my Intel i7 4770K and Asus Z87-PRO motherboard.
The CPU runs very cool at about 28-30 deg. C idling, although it is not overclocked yet.

However here are potential problems with such a large fan cooler:
1) The first memory slot nearest the CPU is just compromised (for tall memory cards with heat spreaders), but this is no problem if you are fitting 16GB as 2 x 8GB memory boards, as one uses the recommended gold coloured slots which are furthest away from the CPU.
2) The cooling assembly compromises the first small PCIe 2.0 x 1_1 slot which is not a problem for me, but comes close to the PCIe 3.0/2.0 x 16_1 slot (the main graphics card slot). I have yet to purchase a high-end graphics card, but usually the main thickness of the card assembly is away from the CPU/cooler assembly, so should be OK.
3) The cooler assembly is quite tall, but just fits in my BitFenix Ghost case OK.

In hindsight, I probably should have gone for the smaller Noctua NH-U12S.

Wow what a cooler, just purchased it together with the i7 4770k and the asus maximus hero vi and it all slotted together bang on.

As they all say though this is a BIG piece of kit so make sure of space available to you, mine fitted in to my HAF 932 case, which is a very large case, with just mm's to spare ( height wise ).

But what a gorgeous bit of kit and so easy to fit, and so much quieter than my previous cooler , I think this is down to the larger fan size and running much slower though, so slow infact that I had to alter the bios to accomodate it, as on boot up I was getting a " slow fan " error on the cpu fan reading.

The ram i also got was the gskill Ripjaws and they fitted a treat, even using the closest slot.

I cannot find a single bad thing to say about this cooler. Not only did it solve every overheating issue I had with the new i7 4790k, it did so quietly and with no issues. The build quality is fantastic, and the packaging is similarly excellent. The mounting kit is about the easiest to work with that I've ever encountered, and Noctua supply all the tools necessary to install it, including their own thermal paste. Compared to the bundled stock Intel cooler, my idle temps dropped by 28c and at load temps by 26c. Bear in mind the Intel stock cooler tripped my motherboard safeties so the temps at load with it (97c+) would have continued to rise and permanently damage the CPU and probably surrounding components.

The included fan is their premium version NFA15 with a higher speed than the retail sold standalone one. This makes it ideal for CPU cooling, which it does so with gusto (sorry). This whole assembly is so much quieter than the stock setup I had to double check the fan was spinning in case I hadn't aligned it correctly.

The NHU14s is cheaper than bottom tier water cooling units, which makes it price to performance wise extremely good value. 100% recommend this to anyone who has a case able to fit it.

An amazing cooler...

Pros:
- Very Quiet! Cannot hear it over GPU fan at 20%
- Cool, idling around 28-30 degrees running 3 monitors (2 GPU 1 CPU) Gaming haven't seen it reach above 55 degrees...
- 100% Fan speed (Highly unlikely it will be used) is noticeable however the fan never sees above 70% as I set it to that speed if the CPU gets to 70 degrees. Therefore making it quiet.
-Build Quality is amazing really sturdy and heafty.

Cons.
-(Debatable) Largish size (Very nitpicking right now)
Nothing Else.

So overall for the price I would recommend this cooler over any Stock Intel fan (Previous CPU cooler I had) as well as recommending it over the Hyper 212.
